OAL cases gauges make your own

Just wanted to share something I've picked up, that some may not know.
OAL cases are expensive and when you load for several different cartridges sometimes hard to find in stock. I took my Hornady tool to my local bolts and fastener store. They measured the threads and ordered a tap 5/16" by 36 threads per inch. The tap cost about the same as one OAL case.
Just drill and tap the base of a fired case and your good to go

Good reminder T

This has been done for many many years now however. I think the ifrst one I did personally was a 280AI when Stony Point didnt make that one. Then the 6SLR a little later. This was around 2004 ish.

Good reminder and advice to those that migh tneed one in a cartridge that is not made by the Manufacture.

Yes I have been doing this for years, I have a small Grizzly lathe in my loading room, I put a case in a Wilson case holder and drill out the case and then tap it, takes just a few minutes, but thanks for the thread, someone will read it and get some good out of it and they too will be making there own cases ;)

Definitely makes sense to make the case-gauges out of brass that has been fireformed to your rifle. Been looking at what thread to cut, now I l know. Thanks! Kind of a pain to find a standard tap though, as around here all be metric. Aye. If anyone over here in Europe has an idea of where to get one don't hesitate to point it out.

Hi Luke hi all

Luke, would you by chance be able to find a Facom tool dealer in your country? Because they make tools in the imperial system, and Facom are life time guarantied. If the retailer you find doesn't have what you want,he can special order it.Hope it helps.

Or,......if you have access to a lathe you can use a single point to cut the threads,....bye the bye,....hello Claude how are you down there ?

there are many suppliers online this is where they ordered mine.

Again my tool is a Hornady OAL you should verify the threads on your tool

Hi Wayne

How was your cattle round up mate? Hope you didn't fall of the horse, hills are pretty steep where you live I hear...I'm doing fine mate, thanks, hope you're OK too...A gooday to all of you gentlemen.

There's sometimes an issue holding the case tight enough to drill/tap without deforming it.
Sometimes the shipping cost runs more than that tap. You won't find one on a shelf anywhere.

I'm a do-it-yourselfer, but it's too easy to send any fired case to Hornady and let them do it for $15....

I have never had a issue with a Wilson case holder not being able to hold the case securely why I drilled and tapped the case, total time from start to finish maybe 5 minutes, I don't want to wait while hornaday does it when I can just as easily and just as good do it myself.
