O/T: Top Shot - "Longest Shot" episode bummer

I was a little bummed to see the setup for the "longest shot on top shot" last night. I don't really watch the show much, but I did catch that particular challenge.

Doesn't seem like that particular challenge required a lot of skill, being only timed based. Basically, the fastest guys just threw lead downrange and walked their shots onto target.

I think a better setup to demonstrate skill would have been to see who could have hit the target in the fewest number of shots, with time being the tie breaker. That way, they would have had to had to demonstrate some actual skill with doping wind and adjusting for elevation.

Jay,

A few seasons ago, they did a 1K challenge with a Barret 50, and it was timed as well... I was disappointed to see that.

One guy dialed in the windage and elevation to compensate for the conditions, and hit the bulls in one shot. He didn't win because it took him longer to do that than it did for the other guys to 'walk it in.' One shot 'hit' at long range should win in my opinion.

I agree 100%.

I think the show is bogus. I know these people have skills, however the challenge's are just plain stupid.

I think the show is ok, but not great. They should of made the challenge different. Say if that AI .338LM was dialed in at 500 yards and they had to hit the 1500 yard target in the LEAST amount of shots by doing the math of the bullet drop and windage and then adjusting the scope. I think the show is set up for the majority of regular people. Not for just 100% gun people.

I especially like the way the mc stands there and announces"he has just missed his first shot and continues to dog the person till he or she is done, and then says good shooting.

just more tv bull ive turned mine off except for history channel& boxing some cage fighting not too many shows im interested in even the gun shows are getting sleezy my poinion only shooter63

It was funny in a way. I was watching it with my wife telling her where I would hold. Sometimes I was right on, others, I was off a little. Never was I off as far as the person on the stick.

My point is, even with my limited wind doping ability, the challenge was a joke. There was a total of one person capable of doping the wind, but none of them seemed able to correct for the tailwind. I thought the game was marksmanship, not IPSC. Sadly, most of the folks on the shows are action-shooting short-range types. While a certain skill set is needed for such things, they can be quite lacking in the ability to simply hit things.

In the end, it is a reality show, I don't know how real it is, but everything is done so it looks good on TV.

Sadly, I was rooting for someone to actually show me some skill. 3 sighters to hit a 2 MOA target with a solid rifle just doesn't qualify in my mind. Maybe I needed to be there.

I was channel surfing and caught most of the 1500 debacle by accident.

Reminded me again why I quit watching after a few minutes of the very first show.....

Your point has some merit however, if someone would be shooting back at you, fastest time to connect means everything. Fiddle and fidget would not get it done on the battlefield.

Missing them with the first shot also tells them that they should be shooting back. Enough misses results in "them" knowing where you are shooting from.

Connecting with the first shot is important on the battlefield because it results in the enemy laying on the ground, unable to return fire. When a first shot hit happens, the enemy is incapacitated more rapidly. Unlike fixed targets, battlefield targets don't hold still. If they know they are under fire, they tend to duck.

Jon,
As per usual our opinions are much the same,.....SPOT ON!!!
Wayne.

Most of the guys hit that 1500 yard target in 5 or less shots. May not be too impressive for someone who shoots long range BR as a primary hobby but it's still pretty impressive. During the 1000 yard "debacle" one of the guys nailed the target on his first shot.... not impressive enough I suppose.

If you think you can do better.. put in your app :P

Regardless I think most of the contestants have demonstrated excellent skills with a variety of weapons. A lot of their challenges look like they've been inspired by 3 gun.

I enjoy show and so does my wife and daughter. Also a number of co-workers watch the show.. including a non-shooters which for me is the best thing about the show. Anything that shows shooting in a positive light and expands interests in shooting sports is a good thing.

You may not care for the show and its format but I think it's a mistake for any shooter to trash it.

I have to agree with the post above. At least or Hobby/Passion is becoming more main stream with the public.

I'll disagree with you two. Bad TV is Bad TV regardless of the subject matter.

Just because guns are used doesn't improve it, IMHO.

"Missing them with the first shot also tells them that they should be shooting back. Enough misses results in "them" knowing where you are shooting from."

This is a mute point if the enemey has already shot you while you're busy fussing and fidgeting with the scope. If you have him running and ducking, he'll be unable to shoot back. ;) In the meantime you have him zeroed in by seeing where your errant shots landed. You go ahead and get everything just so, I'm gonna shoot! ;D
