O/T Short barreled rifle

I have a friend whos father owned several Full auot firearms who just passed away, before he died he sold all the f/auto's to his buddies but when going thru his stuff my friend found a new krieger AR barrel 14.5 inches long, i know the length law of 16 inches for rifles, but he will sell me the barrel for 100.00 and its too good of deal to let go.
Do any of you lawyer/police officers/ATF agents on here know what exactly the legalities are should i chose to buy this barrel?

Rewinder is correct all you need is 16 inches of steel there are many CAR type uppers on the market that only have 12 inch barrels and 4 inch flashider
