O.A.L looks too long...........

Good morning to all..... I finally got to a point where I have aquired all equipt. and components to start reloading for my Rem. 700 .243 Win. I have 2 books with calculations and "recipes" for loading., Lyman and Loadbook USA. ) My first load components are: Winchester .243 casing, CCI lg. rifle primer, 36gr. of Varget,, I'm hoping for 3000fps.) and a Sierra 85gr HPBT. What looks funny is the O.A.L.. The book calls for 2.615. I took a casing and cut it length ways to just below the shoulder with a Dremel tool. This allowed a bullet to slide in and out of the casing with some drag and not with ease. I chambered the round in this casing, and found out where my "lands" contact was and measured. The measurement was 2.688 O.A.L. I seated for .003 off the lands at 2.685. It looks too long. Is this OK, am I seeing things or concerned over nothing ?? Lett'er rip and let the paper be the proof ??

Don't worry. You are fine the way that you are going. Just remember to start low and work up. I prefer to load at the range when working up loads. It takes much less time than guessing, going to the range, and then repeating the process.

Not unusual for Remington 700's to have very long throats in the factory barrels. Interestingly most of them shoot pretty well anyway. Sierra bullets have a reputation for maintaining good accuracy, even if a fellow has to load them short to function through the magazine.

Regards, Guy
