NSS precision ground barrel nut & recoil lug

Have any of you folks out there used these and did you notice an accuracy improvement over the stock Savage barrel nut and recoil lug? I'm getting a barrel from Jim, along with all of the tools to swap barrels, and he is trying to sell me on his barrel nut and recoil lug. I'm wondering if they would benefit me considering that my action has been bedded already, behind the recoil lug and all? Which means if I bought his I would have to remove some of the bedding! Just curious as to others experience with these products!

Thanks,
Mike

CanusLatransSnpr , in theory it should help providing the face of the action is squared off with the internal threads in the action.if you are going to do this job yourself you might want to spend a extra $50.00 and buy the machined bolt head that pacifictoolandgauge sells I did my Savage model 12 myself and when i put it in collet block on a granite block and indicated the bolt face i found out it was concaved .0035 on the face.look at it this way you have a 50/50 chance you can improve the accuracy some.

I know for a fact that my bolt face is concave, you can see it with the naked eye! I'm on the same page as you, given the action face, threads are true and concentric, then there would be some merrit to using the new recoil lug and barrel nut! I'm going to have to look into the ptg bolt head!

Thanks,
Mike

Also, is it bad practice to remove the ejector and leave it out while shooting? I'm just curious if the hole left behind in the bolt face is problematic?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike i shoot with my ejector out,not a problem,i don,t want my good brass i spent lots of time on rolling out on the ground.

I can see the ground lug as an obvious improvement. A friend had a mediocre Savage .223, that was much improved by having the action face squared and a ground lug installed....but I would have to see evidence that the nuts are crooked. I would think that they would be made on some sort of CNC turning center in the first place.

Good deal because I was thinking it would be advantageous to remove the ejector! So replacing the recoil lug is a good idea but, the barrel nut would not benefit much? Jim claims that all of there barrel nuts and recoil lugs are machined/trued post heat treating so there is no dimensional deformities! He did not mention anything as to action face truing! Mind you, this is a varmint rifle. Not a competition rifle!

Thanks,
Mike

Mike, take the plunge for new bolt head if you have the funds, you won,t be sorry,i know i am glad i installed one on my .223

Not my idea, but I liked the idea so well I copied it...... I cut a little off the ejector spring and now my cases lean out a little when the bolt is pulled back. So they are easier to remove yet you don't have to try and catch them or whatever.

I've kicked that idea around a bit too Bill! The idea of plucking cases out doesn't bother me but, I'll have to cross that bridge when I get to it. If it's not efficient enough to pluck cases out, I'll trim the spring and reinstall the ejector!

Thanks,
Mike

I have used both NSS and SSS recoil lugs. The NSS is thicker and truer than the SSS by far. Improvement with bedding. I'll use NSS lugs from here on out.

Just last week I got my PTG bolt head in. It did take a few months to get it in. I ordered it in Oct. But it does seem to be a big improvement over the factory bolt head. The rifle that it's going on isn't built yet. I'm still waiting on my barrel from Krieger to come in.

So the NSS precision ground recoil lug is a must, I get that! I'm convinced about ptg's bolt head also! What about the precision ground barrel nut? Is that a must or could I live without it?

Thanks,
Mike

I've used 3 of the NSS barrel nuts and recoil lugs on builds for customers. The first two were supplied by the customer and I was surprised/pleased by the parts, in fact, very impressed. On the third build, I reccomended the NSS parts.
I'm sure you could true up the factory bbl. nut to be as good but it will still look cheap.

A crooked nut can cant your barrel off center line of your action. It will cause your barrel to hit on one side of the stock. Face the reciever square to the bore, new recoil lug and trued nut and you will be happy.

Fair enough, I will go with the nut too! However, I'm not going to get the face of the action machined. It's just a varmint rifle! If it were a competition gun I would go ahead and get the face of the action squared to the threads but, this isn't the case.

Thanks,
Mike

I'm no xpert, but seems to me you would screw the barrel in the diff in the 2 lugs, and wouldn't require any re-work of bedding.

I would love to see some range proof of all these needed parts. Before and after targets would make me a believer. I own several Stock Savages and im not sure they can get any better. I will admit that a Savage is like going to a horse race these days but when u find that right horse she is a winner.
