NSS Barrels???

Need some input folks. I usually run Harts or Bart's on my rigs but I need some real world reviews about the barrels that Jim sells. Are the CBI's better than the Shilen Selects? Or Vise Versa? Is it worth spending the extra cash to get a blank and have it chambered? I'm still tossing around some calibers but wanted to see what's up with these Savage Pre-Fits??

I'm not familiar with Barts barrels?

I do have several CBI prefits they are a great barrel.
You may have to tell us what the purpose of the rifle is to have an opinion on whether it's worth the extra to have a smith chamber a blank for you

Never purchased a CBI from Jim but I have purchased several Shilens and a few McGowens when he carried that line. Nothing but good things to says about Jim. In terms of the prefits, I think they are great values. I shot a 30BR Shilen prefit in score BR for a while. Never shot a clean 250, but got a 17x-249 my last try. The barrel was much more capibily than me. My 6BR Shilen is a hammer. I have even sent Shilen my reamer and they chambered my barrel to exactly my specs.

If I were building a true custom rig trying to be as competitive as possible then I would want a BR gunsmith to fit it to the action. But I don't live in that world.

Jim (NSS) is a great guy to deal with. Luck, Tim

Tim the barrels I'm referring to as Bart's would be Bartlien BBLs. I'm wanting to build a competitive BR Rig specifically for 1k BR. I already run a custom 700 6BR for 600 BR. I'm tossing around the idea of a 6.5x47 Lapua, a 6.5x284 or a 6mmx284. Not really sure yet but I have a Savage short action and a Savage long action laying around here somewhere that need barrels. I'm thinking of a Dasher on the Short Action and one of the others stated above on the Long Action.

My Shilen Stainless Select Match from NSS Jim shoots lights out. Good reload stats, never had to work hard for great stats and great accuracy.

I've always seemed to have bad luck with smiths - I had ZERO problems with Jim's products. I got the jaws for my vice and a bunch of other goodies from him.

Where did the 30br prefit come from tiny?

It was a Shilen prefit I picked up at the Shilen swap meet. However NSS can order you any caliber that Shilen list a reamer on their site or you can send Shilen your own reamer. Tim

Since you are already shooting a bartlein why would you change being that they and kreiger are at the top of the lists on the benchrest association stats?

If you are serious about building a competitive 1k br rifle, ditch the Savage action and have a good smith fit a top quality barrel to a custom action. Its not possible to build a competitive br rig on a Savage.

That may be true on a National competition basis, but there are plenty of guys being quite competitive with Savage actions on the club level.

We don't all have National aspirations.

I built a 6XC on a Savage action and screwed on a pre-fit Criterion 28" stainless steel barrel that I purchased from Jim at NSS. I have not had much time at all to wring it out because of family obligations and work. But I can tell you this....The initial impressions are quite favorable. Of the 50 fire form loads and 50 test loads that I've tried the barrel shows some real promise. The fit and finish of the Criterion is very nice and cleaning is a breeze. The inside of the barrel is one of the smoothest that I've ever ran a cleaning rod through.....

Keep in mind that my expectations are probably not as high as many of the experienced target shooters on here....but I've been at this a long time in an informal capacity and I can tell a clunker from gem too....

I've shot the shilen select match and the cbi. They both shoot very accurate. They are both easy to clean. The only issue is that the throats come on the short side. I've never owned a mcgowan.

I have several savages with CBI and McGowen prefits in 6 BR and 6.5x47
If you competion plans are for local club matches they will serve you well
I don't see the need to have a smith fit a barrel to a savage with these high quality prefIt barrels available

If you even have a thought of ever going to any higher level competitions IMO
you are wasting your money with the savage action. I've traveled that road, take it for what it's worth

Well most of the Comps I attend are local however if I do plan to go any higher I already have a Bat MB action. I already have 2 actions and that's why I'm looking into Pre-Fits instead of blanks. I'm not gonna get too serious with these 2 builds. Thanks for the info.
