NRA Seeks Host For 2016 & 2017 F-Class Nationals

David Gosnell made a statement last weekend in Phoenix that I think had some merit. He said a true F class national championship would consist of one day of 300, 500 and 600. Day 2 800, 900 and 1000 and a third day of 3 x 1000. Any takers?

This suggestion sounds great. I will cater to all round F class shooters, not just 1000yd magnum shooters. I would like to see this.

Eric,
I agree with you for L-R.
Mid-range didn't come to the fore until 600 was removed from the FCN's. Then everyone clamored for a mid-range championship. I see nothing wrong with limiting the MR Nationals to 600 yards. Effendude should be happy with no 500 required on his range :-).

One item not thought about much is the target face problem at 300 yards. 200's with large X counts is going to eat up target backing centers. We ran into this during SoA's in Raton and we only shot 2 & 10 shots.

Perhaps we should consider shooting only 600 yards during a mid -range Championships? What say you all?
++++++1 on this Larry. At the recent Fl State mid range holes the size of 20MM shells were common @ 300 and we shot 2-20. I vote all 600!

This thread was started 3 days ago and there has not been one comment from anyone in the NRA. I'm guessing this is not up to debate :o

Looks like lots of input and lots of debate......

And lots of good feedback......

Yep except for the distances for mid-range. Not much debate there.
Midrange = 600 LR = 1000.

You guys must be afraid of the 300 yard X ring. :o lol

I don't want to inject myself in this bruhaha, however, your outlook is spot on! At Bayou Rifles, it is not uncommon to get north of 40+ "X's" at 300 yards and if you drop more than 1 point, you will most likely not win>>depending on just how blustery / switchy the wind is. 300 yards is a tough row to hoe>>>not to score good, but to WIN! We have an older gent who scored a 600-52"X's"! That is hard to beat, period!

No, as explained earlier, the targets are usually a mess after one string and need refacing every relay. I shot a local 300 yard match here in San Diego and posted 450-40X, one string was 150-15X. The target center was just crap. If we're trying to determine a national champion, it makes sense to do it at the longest possible distance.

Camp Butner range update.

Forum members have brought up Camp Butner as a possible future F-class nationals match site as we have hosted a national championship in the past.

Our situation has changed somewhat which has reduced our ability to hold a national championship in the near future.

As most of the forum members already know Butner is a federal facility run by the North Carolina National guard. As such we are somewhat limited in what we can and cannot due regarding matches.

For instance the guard has limited the number of shooting points that we can use. Apparently points 1-5 and 46-50 overlap two adjacent ranges so we can't use them during matches. We also lose 6 points due to wind flags and one point to a control house for the electronic targets. That gives us a net 33 firing points.

Then there is the issue of our electronic targets. The guard at times can be somewhat slack when it comes to repairing the broken target carriers which go down on a regular basis. This usually eliminates another 2-3 firing points.

Finally, since Butner is a federal facility we are at the mercy of the whims of our government. On occasion we have had to cancel matches at the last minute due to some guard function. And let us not forget sequestion.

If we can work out the problems listed above we will be happy to host a national championship. Unfortunely correcting these issues might take some time

I hope for an east coast match. There's no way I can take the time off of work to go to Raton. Oak Ridge or Butner would be a huge opportunity.

I know with out spending a small fortune to expand the range, or more the more difficult challenge, parking, Oak Ridge can't accommodate Long Range.

If the NRA let MR be hosted separate from LR, if the MR format was changed to #x600, and if the club would go along and support and host it*, then we could host Mid range as it is today.

My personal rule with regard to projects is that if there are more than 2 "if's" in a scenario don't count on it (esp if you want it to happen).

*I'll toss the idea around over the next few weeks. If it were to happen it means that I have to find time to make it work. All of the regular MDs are sling shooters, we don't have strong F class participation in OR, and I wouldn't expect them to put in the work to stage the event (though someone might MD it so I could shoot) . The weak link in that part of the scenario is me. I don't know if I have the time.

At the TN state championships we used white pasters in place of the spotter, then pasted it black for the next shot, it keeps you from getting the center blown completely out from spotter hits, but it doesn't stop the entire X-ring line, or at least the side the shooters is working, from being obliterated.

At Camp Perry we used tar paper stiffeners behind the new center after every shooter, which still didn't help with the lines on the X-ring being covered with pasters in 7 shots.

The point is you have to try to do something to preserve the targets because the X-ring gets shot to hell. In order to shoot F class at 300 yards we really need pasters that are about .35 or .40 diameter, and even then the X ring is going to get covered up in short order.

On top of all that, 300 yards is an X game, because it's rare for a real competitor to drop 3 or more. (my performance at the TN state shoot not withstanding)
