NRA Approves F-TRipod Class for F-Class Competition

Everyone is having a lot of fun with this and I am all into that. But since I was around when they dug the river I have seen a lot of change, some good and some bad, I will offer some thought on this subject. Some or your comments remind me of things that the conventional prone shooters (aka sling shooters) said about the F Class shooters when they first showed up. Now F Class is one of the most positive things that has happened to the sport since folks figured out how to shoot XTC with the AR. Not only is F Class bringing many new shooters into the sport but it is driving the accuracy improvements we are seeing. I am still a sling shooter and do not shoot F Class so I may be in a position to be more objective. It is possible that ten years from now if folks can shoot smaller groups from the tripod than in the prone position one or two folks will be shooting F Class in the prone position and everyone else will be shooting from the tripod and the sport will still be growing. If it turns out that folks can shoot smaller groups from the tripod why would you shoot from the prone position? if it turns out that folks can not shoot smaller groups from the tripod then only a few folks will do it. Also you can be sure that the tripod ten years from now will not look like the tripod of today and the NRA analysis on cost will be moot. My intention is to stimulate thought and conversation and not to bring out the forum bullies. I am not criticizing anyone and there are some very funny comments offered.

Hint: I think you may have missed the date on the original post... ;)

Hoax or not why not try it, that is how we got F Class. Most match directors would let you shoot the match just not for awards and they would not send the scores in to NRA for registration. If it is safe and does not disrupt others shooting to win, why not. It would be interesting to see how folks would do and it could open up an opportunity for a bunch of new shooters. Does anyone see a down side to this? Several years ago I had a friend who started shooting XTC with a scope and he just wrote "disqualified score" on his score card and he had a lot of fun shooting "any rifle any sight" in XTC. Now several folks do this and the rule book even now has a category for this. What do you think?

I really like your open mind Sir, and at my local club we have a bench class for every reason you stated.

Thanks for your support. I am a dinosaur and still shoot the M14 but why not make the tent as big as possible and include as many folks as we can. I support the NRA and the rules and the classification system but F Class has demonstrated what is possible and we need to make the most of that. I no longer serve as a match director but would recommend to those that do to include as many variations as they can safely accommodate. There are competitors and shooters, the competitors are in it to win and normally do not contribute much to the sport and there are shooters that would like to win but are the ones who contribute to the sport and run things for the competitors.

I'm with you on this one Clyde. If it could be demonstrated that it can be shot safely and there is no greater risk of violating the safety fans I would allow it. But then, I fought to "legitimize" F class and bring about FT R. Win some. I pushed hard to allow suppressors as well. Win some, lose some.
