Not Happy

Well this sucks >:( I took my rem 700 SA to a gunsmith to get it rebarreled
It was a sporter barrel .243 I bought new in 1991. purchased a take off rem
Varmint contour .243 barrel and took it to have the barrel set back and rechambered to .243 ackley improved. After about 4 months I get it back
then I bought a HS sendero take off stock to drop the barreled action in
When I dropped it in the stock the barrel was hard against the barrel channel
to the right side. So I thought crooked stock well I purchase a new B&C stock
Drop the action in tighten the action screws and it is hard against the right
Side of the barrel channel. So I think well how can two stocks be crooked
so I pull my vssf 22-250 from its HS stock drop it in the B&C and its a perfect fit
I check the runout on the barreled action checking the runout on the barrel first and then on the action I know that the outside or the barrel and action aren't going to be perfect the runout I see on the barrel is about .005 and the runout at the very front the action near the face is .008 and its .035 at the rear of the action in the direction to be putting the barrel to the right in the barrel channel. So I call this gunsmith
And tell him the problem I'm having and he suggest I hog out the stock in action area and bed it in the stock with the barrel lined up in the barrel channel. He never said bring it back and let me take a look at it and says the only way to true it up is cut new threads in the action and the barrel doesn't have enough shank to set it back again to rethread. My complaint is, the original barrel action
Never had this issue before? So just to confirm that I opened the barrel channel
on the original stock to accept the varmint contour and guess what? It hits the right side of the barrel channel. Sorry to be so long winded but is it normal
to see this much runout in a remington action? It would be real close to running
a scope out of windage to zero it in. So what the crap? He said he trued the face of the action but I don't know if its really true or if the barrel was cut untrue
Or a combination of both. I called yesterday and told him I was bringing it back
What do you guys think of this?

if it is something he did wrong what makes you think he can fix it? I think I'd find a new gunsmith with a reputation!
just my $.02

I have no idea how he ended up with such a mess. Maybe if the barrel was crooked but even then he could have indexed the muzzle to the top.

However, I agree, take it to someone else and have it done right. He might have cost you a barrel if he cut tenon and threads wrong.

If he's a qualified gunsmith he should have been able to tell you that before he started work. I'm with the other guys on this one - find another gunsmith and get some references.

I don't think he can fix but he can make the deal right by giving me a refund
on a terrible job I don't expect to get the money for the barrel back but let's face
it he could give what he charged for a shitty lob. This guy was the closest smith
To me and came recommended from the list on mauser central so I thought he could screw a barrel on straight! Maybe I talking a little early here until I take it to him to check out, we will see.

Good grief, any one that even resembles a gunsmith should have either noticed something was up immediately if something was wrong with either the action or barrel. What does this guy indicate with, homemade wooden slide rulers?

A good smith will 100% guarantee his work, and will notify the customer if supplies items will effect the outcome, sounds like this guy is incapable of either.

Devils advocate here . Did he advise you against using used barrels , or against the idea at all?
I agree get a smith that understands what you expect and also has more than a cd/video education under his /her belt.

A gunsmith once told me he has seen some remington actions (very few) that were banana shaped. He said theres nothing you can do to fix it. just have to go with it or get a different action

It could be the action it's self. Just think that if you were going do the work
You would at least check the parts your working with before doing the job
had I been informed the action had tons of runout I wouldn't have proceeded
With the build with that action. I'm not going to say he is a crappy smith because I have no evidence really that he done a bad job on the rebarrel. Just
maybe should have checked out the parts before proceeding. I will know more
next week when I take it back to him to look at.

I personally would never spend the money to have a smith rechamber a factory tube,.that is number one! second this barrel may have been screwed up from the get go, he probably never checked that, he probably dialed it in and ran the AI ream in, there isn't enough tennon to cut all the threads off and start over on a new barrel and most good smiths will not cut off a thread or two rechamber and try to pick the threads back up, so let this be a good lesson to you, buy a Krieger or some other reputable barrel make and have a Smith with a very good track record chamber it for you, not being a butt here just been there and done that and I have had a dozen good smiths work for me over the years and none of them want to mess with a factory tube,...there is a reason for that!

When a customer comes in with a factory action, a different factory barrel.....I tell them this at the start. You are paying me to chamber / recut a so-so barrel. Accuracy will be what it is. I say you need an aftermarket lug. They say reuse the factory lug.....I say, well......No. I ask if they want the action trued or not. They say no. I hand them the rifle or parts back and say no thank you

I wish now that's what he done. But now it's a little late to tell me that.
Bozo's right I will chalk this one up as a lesson learned the hard way
and find a new smith who is upfront about things.

Rem6br; I feel your pain. In your 1st posting you mentioned Mauser Central and my ears perked up. I used 2 of the 'smiths that were either listed there and/or got good reviews.

The 1st one twisted a Mauser action of mine while removing the original scrapped barrel. I geuss he never thought of putting a relief cut between the barrel shoulder and reciever face before he twisted away with whatever wrenches he used. Itold him to send all my parts back.....

The 2nd 'smith had the same parts and a new found (by me) receiver. 6-7 months later, after getting told he only had this or that left to do, I told him to send the project back as is ( it was a rebarrel, install the orignal sights, tune the trigger project). Not some custom job. He had time to post on the internet nearly every night but not take care of business.

Oh well..... hard to find good anything these days. A gunsmith, A Doctor, Auto mechanic, etc...

When does this BS end?? Th Mauser original military barrels DO NOT shoulder on the action, they fit against the inner "C" ring. Taking that cut between barrel and receiver will do no good.

In retrospect, that first smith probably tried to use an internal action wrench to remove the barrel. That is a no no on them. I have a wrench I made that will not twist an action.

ptf18,

Send your Mauser to Gundoktr if you want it done right, he is a real craftsman and you will be happy.

Thought we were discussing a Remington 700 SA project ;D

No,...we were discussing a poor job done by a smith recommended from a Mauser gun sight, the rifle in question just happened to be a Remington.
