Not enough neck to reach lands

Don’t be scared to try jumping either. I don’t have a 308, but several 6.5 rifles. Ten years ago I got a bunch 6.5 Amax 140’s. I tried shooting them close to rifling, but never very well and gave up. A year later I tried them at mag length in a different rifle, and they shot great.

I think try a bullet that's made to jump also. A 300 BLK bullet. A Speer 125 TNT or 130 Varment or Sierra 125 MK. The Berger 155.5 FB does great with a big jump in my 30-06.

I've been trimming by the book to about 2.005 if I remember correctly.
You need to remember, most reamers cut about .020 longer than Max length. Don't be trimming till you know what you're dealing with. Can you say TOO MUCH FREEBORE??
Sounds like if you want to go shorter, a setback of the chamber in in order. I prefer ZERO. That way, you can always go longer. ;)
Factory HS Precision in .308 had a .050 jump to the lands. DEADLY ACCURATE!! :D :D

I had the same Rem 700 308 vsf, was my starter ftr rifle. Shot best with the 175 smk and the 185 juggernaut and varget. Shot about as good as the barrel would allow at around. 050-.075 jump. Biggest issue was at 10-12 rounds into the string, the barrel heat would cause walking in the 1-2 o'clock direction.

I have the same issue with my Super 14 Contender in 7MM TCU which are pretty notorious for having a long throat. I've shot Speer 145 gns since the 1980s but picked up some Hornady 139s to try. I tried to make a modified case for my Hornady OAL gauge but was having difficulty because the case is so small. I packaged a couple of cases up to send to Hornady to have one made. Before I sent them on a whim I dropped a bullet into the chamber then dropped a sized case in behind it. I was able to close the action with the bullet just barely stuck in the case when removed. I changed my mind about needing a modified case.

I shoot the Barnes TTSX's, as they shoot really well seated short with the right powder, as do most of the lead-free bullets. Those are what I shoot in my old Ruger 77's

I would get it rechambered to suit the projectile that you want to use, rather than the one-size-fits-all approach that the factory used. Or even re-barrel with a Remage pre fit - I'm sure that Urban Rifleman on here can sort you out.

I had a Lee Enfield No 5, re-stocked by Parker Hale some years ago. It was capable of a 6 inch group at 100 yds. You could drop a 174g into the chamber, followed by a case - and they never met! There was a least a 250 thou gap! So much for PH's quality control.

Sounds like this is a hunting rifle? Load to mag length and look/load for accuracy. If the load is acceptable, feeds and ejects well, why worry about the lands? 1/2 MOA is more than is needed for hunting. I chase the lands in my competition rifles but don't in my hunting rifles.

I’ve been re-reading Tony Boyer’s Book of Rifle Accuracy recently and your options to address this are well covered including for bench rest rifles and magazine fed rifles, so you might want to take a look at that in addition to the suggestions already in this thread.
