Nosler Varmageddon vs. Hornady Vmax

The 50 gr., V-Max, produces "Splodies" on Sage Rats that, I can SEE at, 3,550 FPS from, a 24" Braked, .22-250 to,..
250-300 Yards and they ARE,.. CHEAP and,.. AVAILABLE !
Sub 1/2 MOA for me with,.. H-4895,.
I'll Look,.. NO further !

Should all of us readers just happen to somehow know what the barrel-twist rate is that these bullets are being shot through~?????
My 1981 model, Rem 700 .22-250, L-H, Med weight, "Sporter Barrel" Rifle ( 8 Pounds W/ Burris Scope and Brake ) is a, 1-14 Twist and shoots, the 50 gr. V-Maxes with, LOTS of, "Jump" just,.. FINE !
I use a Reduced Charge of, H-4895 to Keep the Velocity down to, 3,550 FPS to REDUCE, Muzzle Jump AND,...
SEE, the Splodies, on Sage Rats !
The NICE "Thing" about, the DESIGN of, .22-250 Rem Cartridge is that, it can be, "Down Loaded" and STILL Be,..
very, VERY,.. Accurate !

I've shot thousands upon thousands of each, most loaded out of a Dillon 1050 with H335, mostly in range pick-up brass. I prefer the V-Max 50 and 55gr simply because of availability and price. The prairie dogs have never noticed any difference in bullets. I do think the V-Max are a little more dramatic upon impact. Typical shot distances are 25-300 yards away. We just move closer as the shots get farther or when the wind picks up. All my AR-15's have 1-8" barrels and shoot the 50 and 55gr just fine.

The Nosler and the V-Max are as different as apples and oranges. One has a tangent ogive and the other has a secant ogive. What ever ogive your rifle likes.

I admit to not experimenting with other brands much, especially after I find what works best for my rifles, but the Hornadys I shoot now are the most accurate I have fired in any of my rifles - 25-grain VMAX - 17 Remingtons, 52-grain AMAX - .22/250 Remington, 53-grain VMAX - .223 Remingtons, 75-grain VMAX - .243 Winchester (although Nosler 80-grain SPBTs sometimes shade them a bit) , 120-grain VMAX - 7BR...well, you get the picture.

I’m running 53 vmaxs in my 223’s. Great ballistics for that particular bullet, and accuracy is plenty good for woodchucks out to 400 yards.

So the other day I was in the squirrel patch and this squirrel came up to me and said. you are using a bullet with the wrong ogive, you won't be able to hit me, well I said. well see about that. boom/plat and as you can see he ended up with spinabifda. The moral of the story is, if I can talk to squirrels, I have a whole different set of issues.

Find the bullet that shoots best in your rifle, regardless of whoever made it and shoot that bullet. Simple really.

I talk to "our squirrels" too. They consistently tell me to "go home white-boy and take that sweet shooting rifle with you!" (In squirrel-talk of course)

Tens of thousands of ground squirrels can't be wrong! They lose their minds (and heads) when they see me!

For me, it's either the Nosler Varmageddon or Ballistic Tip, but then I'm in the shadow of their plant, so there's that.

There is not much lacking in the V-Max line - either in cost or accuracy. Great bullets. I had purchased a lot of the varmageddon bullets several years ago with intent of working up additional accuracy loads for sage rats and ground squirrels. just never got around to it yet. At the time I bought them, they were so inexpensive, they were thought of as "back up" to my V-Max hoard. Prices seem to have changed a lot between the two lines. One of these days, I'll be giving the Noslers a go.
