Nosler Brass?

Recently I was given a box of new Nosler, 300 Winchester Magnum brass. Has anyone used this stuff? Good, bad? I see that it is high dollar, but the reviews are very mixed.

Thanks
Matt

I got some when they first came out and have to say they were less then great. Matter of fact factory Win. cases were more consistent. Your mileage will probably vary.

I've had very good success with Nosler brass for my 7mm rem mag. But then it's for a 1/2 MOA hunting rig. While I did do the full brass prep, it didn't include neck turning so I don't know the variation in the neck wall thickness.

I don't recall the weight distribution for the brass? I do recall that is was much better than both the remington and winchester brass on hand.

Cheers,
Toby

I ran Nosler brass in a .260 for a while. It seemed good for the first few firings. After about 5 firings the primer pockets began to open. I would lose 2 -3 pieces every round after that. After it all went south I went to Lapua. I did run close to make loads for my gun because thats where the node was best. However, the Lapua brass has stood the test of time for about a year now. For the price I thought it should be stronger.

I've just fired some Nosler brass in one of my 260 Rems for the 11th time. Primer pockets are still holding out. I got the Nosler brass when it first came out as I was struggling with the Remington brass and Lapua hadn't started making any 260 Rem brass. I now have some Lapua 260 Rem brass too so I'm unlikely to buy any more Nosler brass. That's not to say that the Nosler brass hasn't done a good job for me.

FWIW the Nosler 223 Rem cases are cut very short, a full 0.005" shorter than SAAMI Minimum Case Length (not Trim To Length).

I don't know if other cases are cut short. I suspect they cut 223 Rem short because of the ubiquity of AR application today.

A friend gave me a box of Nosler 223 Rem, and I gave them back with thanks when I discovered how short they were. I shoot a lot of 40 and 50-gr varmint bullets, and like to be able to seat at or near the lands, and the short Nosler neck left me with too little neck engagement for comfort, less than 0.1" as I recall w/ 40-gr V-max seated just touching the lands (forget about "jammed"!)

(Please, spare me any "Why don't you just seat with plenty of bullet jump?" etc. There's a principle involved. Nosler shouldn't be deciding for me how close to the lands I can get in a standard chamber. They should cut no shorter than Trim To Length like every other manufacturer.)

Their 243 brass is a considerable amount shorter than the Winchester variety also, when forming 243 ai with both the Nosler drew up quite a lot. In the end the Winchester formed had .040 more neck length. Made the decision on what brass to use pretty easy.

When I can get it, I prefer raw brass which is untrimmed, with the uneven case mouths. Then I can select the cases with the longest necks, and trim them only enough to square up the ends. This can leave the cases significantly longer than Trim To Length. Since I use chamber length gauges to determine just how long the necks of my chambers are, I know I can let the cases be as long as I can get them. But with trimmed brass, or factory ammo cases, I'm stuck with standard Trim To length cases (except with the extra short Noslers, as already noted.)
