nosler ballistic tips and seating depth

I jam them in as far as possible without pulling a bullet when extracting a loaded round. so the 0.005 measurement is likely closer but i cant- and do not measure it.

Ballistic tips seem to have a mind of their own. Some rifles I have loaded for liked them jammed or close to it and some have done better at .010 to .030 jump.

Shoot a lot of these, i.e. 50 and 55's, out of my 223 bolt rifles. Very accurate.

However, ogives can vary quite a bit from lot to lot and even within a box of 250 so I never seat closer than .010 from the lands as a safety and functionality precaution. I never had a problem developing very accurate loads for my precision varmint rifles seating off the lands .020 or even greater depending of the rifle.

Of course the magazine and amount of free bore can limit the seating depth. My Rem 700 has quite a bit of free bore.

I called Nosler a long time ago and they told me to start with the diameter of the bullet in the case and see how it shoots. It always shot pretty good but you still need to work with the seating depth.

50 grainers shoot very well loaded to mag length in my suppressed Model 7 yet I couldn't get them to group for shit in a ,222 L56 heavy barrel Sako with all manner of jumps tried. Gave up on them and went back to a Hornady #2240 which shot .3 MOA all day long. Sometimes it's just the bullet/rifle combo no matter what you try.

Absolutely agree about bullet / rifle combo. In fact, the single most influential factor affecting accuracy in my experience of load testing is the selection of the bullet provided you are using a suitable powder for that cartridge. In my experience you can maybe squeeze a few .1" by changing primers or adjusting the seating depth but it's the bullet that makes the most significant impact.

The 50 Nosler BT's group in the sub 1/4 moa range in my Weatherby Super Varmint Master and and my rebarrelled Rem 700 with a Douglas Match barrel, both 223's. However both of these rifles have a 12" twist.

In my Tikka Varmint, the 55's shot better that the 50's but I had to reduce the powder charge over that I use for my standard loads for my the 12" twist rifles. However the 60 Vmax's shot lights out in my Tikka in the sub 1/2 moa range but that rifle has an 8" twist.

Them things can really shoot with a little development time.
Chaps that come here use the 69gr Berger for rabbits and 2" groups right out at 500.

My Rem 700 VSSF II puts 10 50gr BT’s into one hole at 100, it has barrels in 22-250 (factory 26”), 22-250AI 28” and 6.5x47 29”.
It’s blueprinted/trued and I hand lapped the lugs prior to truing everything up. It didn’t need much work, total of .0025” out of all centreline measurements. Pretty impressed with that.

Cheers.
