Nosler 107gr. Custom Competition vs Hornady 105 AMax

I'm getting ready to start loading some bullets for my soon to be finished 6 Dasher, I'll be using this gun for mainly groundhog hunting & a little target shooting has anyone compared these 2 bullets?

Accuracy is my main concern, over knockdown power.

Thanks

Even for ground hog hunting? I would figure it wouldn't take much to kill a ground hog, I figured the percussion of the bullet hitting it would tear it up pretty good on its own but I don't want to have the ground hog suffer either.

there are a lot of bullets that just zip right through a ground hog. I have shot them and could not even tell that they had been hit.

Stick with bullets meant to expand to eliminate crawlers. Amax do well, 87g V max is another great one. I have wanted to try a 95g ?Sierra Tipped match king.

I agree with what Ackleyman said. The AMax will expand reliably at any reasonable range. The Nosler, not so much.

Ok thanks that's what I'll use then.

I'm a big fan of Hornady any how, but a local gun shop has a great deal on Custom Competition in bulk and I was looking to save some money.

Accuracy and explosiveness is about the same using the 105 V-Max, 105 Nosler, and 107 Nosler in my fast twist 6BR. Not much experience beyond 500 yards with this gun, except on targets.....so cannot comment explosiveness beyond that....but accuracy is there....

If the 105 Amax makes you feel good for Varmint hunting use them. If you can buy the 107 Nosler Custom Competition at a great deal then build them for target shooting if you like.

I can get 1000 107 custom competition bullets for about $145. I just don't know if I'll do that much target to make it worth having 1000 laying around. I was hoping the hollow pointment ( as small as they are) would expand a little on groundhogs

I'd be more concerned with pass-thru / ricochet with the nosler CCs.

I shot the nosler 69gr custom comp in a 22brx varmint gun and they were devastating. Light jackets compared to sierras. They fragmented at the front and the back of the bullet mushroomed and shed its jacket when I shot them into a pile of compressed cloth. I know that isn't a varmint body but terminal performance on red fox was fine.

Thank you I shoot the 69gr. Custom Competition out of my 223 wylde & 5.56 Ranch but I wasn't sure if the thicker jacket on the 6mm would keep it from mushrooming

I do believe the 105 amax has been discontinued.

Yes, the new 10th Edition Hornady manual shows nearly all of the A-Max line is discontinued.
Apparently they were replaced by the new ELD-M line of bullets with the new tip. For some reason the manual
shows a couple of 30 caliber A-Max bullets as still available.

So if this is true like it seems to be what is my next best option?
Custom Competition, Bergers or will the ELD - M still be my choice? Looking around the 105gr. Area.

I would do some of your own testing before you write off the Nosler CC. At least in 22 and 30 cal they have pretty thin jackets and expand well. The 6 mm may or may not do the same thing. Other than that I would look at the ELD-M.

I will say that when the Amax used to be available, it was devastating... Shot some hogs with the 168 Amax loaded to a sedate 2500 fps, and the exits were fist-sized...

I didn't realize the 105 Amax had been discontinued as it was available for a while after some other calibers were long gone.

The Amax was a good bullet at a good price. IMO, it was only killed as an effort to sell the ELD at a higher profit margin. I for one am not buying it! I'll be shooting Sierras and spending the extra for Bergers.
