Norwegian competition, unbelievable

Well, part of the key to those crowds watching is the electronic targets as they use ETs to show the hits on the targets. Just another reason to get ETs up and running (i know this was another thread!). But, I do like how the Norwegians turn it into an EVENT, not just a little shooting competition. Heck they had music playing for goodness sakes and a guy interviewing the shooters. Cool.

yes, and at a spectator-supported public venue like that the targets are no doubt professionally maintained.

you brought it up.

Found it quite fun that this video has surfaced on the other side of the Atlantic. Some additional information for you.

This video is from the 2008 National Championship Stang shooting event arranged by DFS (literally the Norwegian Voluntary Shooting Association, but perhaps a better translation is the National Rifle Association of Norway). DFS has about 150 000 active shooters and is by far the largest shooting organization in Norway (constituting roughly 3% of Norway's population)

Stang shooting (Stangskyting) named after Colonel Georg Stang (1858-1907), is a practical rifle competition popular in Norway where the shooter has two periods of 25 seconds to get as many hits as possible on a target at an unknown distance, with an unlimited number of rounds.

The rifles used are the Sauer 200STR and the service rifle of the Norwegian armed forces HK AG3, at least at the time. Later replaced by the HK416 which basically is a gas piston operated version of the M4. The 200STR is basically the standardized rifle for all shooting within DFS, except for the option to shoot your service rifle. 98% of the shooters shoot the 6.5x55Scan with a very few staying with the 308win.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'm one of the guys that didn't bother with the basics and jumped straight to F-class but I should still able to answer a few of your questions.

And the crowd has the presence of mind to being ear protection, even for youngsters. We could learn a thing or two from our Norwegian friends!
Wonderful, telling commentary on shooting sports where it still is a national pastime.

Hey..did you see those "TRUMP" posters in the crowd?? I also spotted a crumpled up "Black Lives Matter " poster in the trash!!

:) ;)

I find it impressive that it appears to be a spectator sport there. With either electronic targets or target cams, it could be transformed to the same here. A lot of expense, I know, but if we wish for our sport to grow, we need to make it easy for the public to follow, and see what is happening, as it happens or a later broadcast. Most of the traditional rifle shooting disciplines are on the decline in attendance. It would be neater than hell to see a BR match broadcast on a national broadcasting company TV show.

I've got to be honest, I don't see long range shooting taking off as a spectator sport. Action shooting (3gun, pistol, cowboy, etc) is more likely to get TV coverage.

I enjoyed watching the amazing exhibition of skill, but I didn't think that there should have been shooters walking through the crowds with bolts closed on their rifles. Think safety first. James Mock
