Norma brass .284 Shehane reamer question

With the introduction of the Norma .284 brass do you think that reamers made for necked up Lapua will still suffice? Bill recommended for me to use .318 neck and .250 freebore. (180 hybrid mostly and maybe VLD or Scenar). I am going to send him some of my Norma brass to mic when it arrives to see if the JGS print is still valid. Most of the references here are long freebores to avoid seating at the donut with necked-up 6.5X.284 brass. Now with no donut what will the freebore recommendation be and will the new Norma brass be significantly different to necessitate a change in current .284 Shehane reamers?

I think the reamer assortment out there will suffice for the New Norma brass. I have a .200 FB and a .238 FB, I do think the . 238FB is too long for the 108 HYBs but ok for 180 VLDs.

my new batch necks mic .016 with less than one thou variation on the few I measured. They weigh 2 grains less than a lapua 6.5x284.

good to know. now, load up 10 rounds and shoot them multiple times and let us know when those primer pockets start to get dicey :P someone's got to take one (or ten) for the team ;)

I use Norma .270 WSM brass to make .300 WSM. There is no more problem with primer pockets than with Lapua in my Shehane. My Norma brass has the best case wall runout I've ever seen, as measured with the NECO Audette type tool.

I notice you said "now with no donut... What would freebore recommendations be?" I would still seat the bullet to stay out of the neck/shoulder junction, but that's just me.

Rick is right and .200-.220" will work well with 180 Hybrids. Expect ~.002" erosion per 100 full power rounds at F-Class cadence.

Dont know about scenar as they are crazy expensive to shoot, but vld and hybrid 220 freebore would be about right. VLD's start to seat into the donut area if you dont remove it, and hybrids are just a bit clear of the donut. Will be checking halfway through the barrel life when the hybrids get a little far out for my liking to see if I can swap straight over to VLD. Have done it before in another cal. Hybrids and VLD's both jammed shot same POI.
