Using new Lapua 284 Win brass for 284 Shehane

I have been using 6.5-284 Lapua brass for 284 Shehane and wanted to use the new Lapua 284 Win brass to fire form. Just wondering if there were any issues with that.

Only with the words "fire form"! I regularly use 6.5-.284 Lapua brass also, and if I were to ever use the Lapua .284 brass; I would not bother the extra step to "fire form"...just fire form it, if you will, at the big match!

There's a difference between just necking up 6.5-284 to straight 284, and taking 284 to the improved Shehane configuration.
Myself, i would not fireform to an improved configuration at a match.

For such a small change (.010) of the body diameter I wouldn't hesitate to shoot it at a club match. Really big matches, probably not unless I was in a bind. If you think about it, we basically "fire-form" every time we re-size the brass then shoot it. I have recorded more that a few 197-199 scores at 1K while fire-forming a cartridge that moves things around a lot more than a Shehane. i.e body taper blown out, shoulder angle changed.

One time, I shot 6.5 Remington Mag brass at a match to fireform 6.5 Rem Mag Imp. shot better scores while improving.

measure the new lapua 284 brass, the neck thickness is not the same as the old necked up 6.5 284
Mine for a no turn is .319-.320 area not .317

Got my first .284 Shehane and would like to use VV N560 or N555 as well available in Europe. Any experience with this powder. My OAL is 3.17" with Hornady ELD Match 180gr. and the new Lapua 284 Win brass. Not sure what amount of powder I should use to fireform the case with one of these powders.

As long as you check your chamber neck diameter beforehand I would do as Dan Biggs and Norm Harrold suggest. These guys know what they are doing. Well, at least Norm does!!!!!

Definitely check chamber neck diameter if you don't turn. The Lapua 284 brass neck thickness is thicker than the 6.5-284.

My reamer has a .317 neck, which I spec'ed for no turn 284, based off the 6.5-284 brass. However once the 284 brass was released I found out it's a little too tight with a .317 neck.

I did find that with my batch of lapua 284 brass the neck thickness was anywhere from .014-.0165". So I needed/wanted to turn anyway.

Load one of the bullets you intend to shoot in a case, use calipers to measure the neck diameter with the bullet in the case. Check the corresponding diameter of the chamber to see if you have enough clearance. Some like them close but I think you need .002 minimum.

I run .002 to .0025 per side on mine or a .315 to .3155 loaded round and a .320 neck.
wont hurt to have a bit more....and I turn some too just because I like how they seat...like butter.
