Norma 6MM PPC Brass

I ordered some Norma Reloading Brass 6mm PPC from Midway. When I got the package it came in a small white box and the headstamp was 6 PPC USA. What is the difference between that brass and Norma 6 PPC not with the USA headstamp. Is it safe to assume that this brass from Midway is very old stock?

Thanks,

I don't think it's safe to assume you got old brass. Based on the Video and written text below it, and the wording used, it looks like the USA headstamp is the new stuff that came out in 2010.

Here's the Video with Lou Murdica at the 2010 Shot Show and the text below it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAFleA_mQv8

My understanding is that the "New" Norma case did not have the USA on the headstamp. This brass that I received measures at least 1.503 in length, isn't that original Sako PPC USA dia., which should not fit a non USA chamber.

I have some roughly 20 year old Norma 6PPC and some I purchased recently. The case head of both are marked Norma 6PPC USA. The older cases have a neck wall that is approx .001 thinner than the new brass. Unturned, the old brass has a loaded neck dia. of .264. The new brass will load out at approx .266. The 20 year old brass was a 20 count box and had a Midway product number of 338608. The new 20 count boxes at Midway have a product number 432351. My 100 count of newer brass was backordered so I am quite sure it was new production.

I've got some of the new stuff in my garage. Just checked it. It's in a white box from MidwayUSA too and is headstamped Norma 6PPC USA. Tried it. Never liked it. Every 4th one wouldn't eject from my BAT action. Chambering and extraction were fine. Sporadic ejection was the issue. Went back to the Lapua 220 Russian and never had a problem. Plus, Lapua is cheaper, by 10 cents a case over Midway's price and in my humble opinion is better brass: http://www.brunoshooters.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=BSS&Product_Code=4PH5013

I got some Norma from Huntington's last year. It came in a sealed plastic bag with the inventory tag on it. I've been using the Norma for 5 or more years in both the Panda and a couple Rugers with no issues at all. Good stuff as far as I'm concerned. ;) WD

Evidently older Norma 6PPC brass was soft enough at the head to be rejected by shooters that prefer hot loads, even though it was of high quality in all other respects. Recently, they have changed the manufacturing process for these cases to one where head is "double struck" to increase work hardening, addressing the previous objections. One or two shot shows back Lou Murdica reported that he had tried these cases and found them to hold up to pressure as well as cases formed from Lapua .220 Russian cases. More recently, someone has reported that at the highest pressures that cases grow at a noticeably faster rate than Lapua. I have not tried any yet. Perhaps I should make a call to Bruno's and order 20 to try.

I have some and i really like it. If i had anything to complain about it would be that the headspace from the factory is a bit short. i would rather have to push the case back .001 to get a good crush fit on my first firing. No biggie i guess, as it shoots great and holds up well. I have also read what Mr Allen posted above about the cases growing under high pressure. I myself haven't witnessed this but there again i dont shoot super hot loads. i never found a need to. Buy some and try it, i think you will like it. Lee
