Norma 203B in 6BR

I read the article on 6mmBR a while back desribing Norma 203B as being the 'Holy Grail' of 6BR powders. Naturally, when I managed to find some, I simply HAD to get some and try it.

Holy shiverin' sheep dip, that suff has to be the FILTHIEST burning powder I have EVER used. Load density was good, requiring 32.2 grains to get up to 2850, but results were not as good as Varget.

I recenly shot a 240 round, 4-day match using Varget and never cleaned the rifle the whole trip. I placed second over-all, and the top 6 shooters all did the same thing.

I seriously doubt I could shoot an entire day without cleaning using 203B... What's it made of: Old Tires?

Obtunded,

203B Shot very clean in my rifle, and exhibited a HUGE accuracy window... meaning that it was delivering 1/4-MOA accuracy with low ES from 29.7 to 30.7 grains. Norma 203B is very similar to Reloder 15, about which you hear the same comments. Some guys say RL15 shoots dirty... but then the guys who push it at higher pressures often praise it as being very clean.

Every barrel is different though. My 6BR barrel is a very smooth PacNor 3-groove and carbon doesn't stick too much. I also clean minimally so there aren't a lot of micro-scratches in the bore.

Note however, the 203B I was shooting is 5 years old. The new stuff may be somewhat different.

I use Kriegers, and the barrel in which this was used is about 700 rounds into its life. It simply does not foul.

The 203B experiment was... interesting, if not an outright disappointment.

I have used - and really - liked RL-15. I never expereinced any problems with the type of carbon residue I got with the Norma. Just shows ta goya that not all powders are created equal.

Cheers,

Ian
