Noob necking down 6.5x47L

Gents,

I'm going to get some hornady sizing wax (can't get the redding). If I remove the decapping rod, and just neck it down that way with my Forster die, and the load and fire form, that donut shouldn't be a chambering problem and will disappear when I next resize?

If that's the case I will just do that.

That is correct. However, taking the decapping rod out is not going to change anything. The non-sized portion of the neck has never affected being able to chamber a round in any of my barrels. I would ,however, recommend chambering a few that you have run through your die and bump the shoulder accordingly if need be (but I dont think you will need to).

you can try that , is that a bump die? just the other day I necked down my 6.5x47 to a 6m by mistake, I left my 6mm br die in the press put my 6.5L in and result was a perfect 6-6.5x47, just a thought if you have a 6mmBR die

Was it fired brass? What we are discussing only pertains to virgin brass. Once it is fired, this unsized portion doesn't ever appear again.

all my 6.5 brass has a unsized pertion , my bushing die only goes down half the neck, yes it was fired brass , the 6mm br die went all the way down sizing the part that doesn't normally get sized , reason, the 6mmbr die is shorter so it will size all the neck, redding bushing die for my 6.5x47 only does half the neck that half is .287 the unsized is.293, he is trying to remove the unsized portion so he can turn the neck, correct?

Unless I have misunderstood the OP's question, He is using a full length Forster 6x47 die and with virgin brass they will not size the full length of the neck (with virgin 6.5x47 brass). If you use fired 6.5x47 brass this will not happen. Once you have fired the necked down virgin brass this unsized portion will never appear again. This is not a donut in the traditional sense and it is probably not a good idea to turn it down as it would just make that small portion of your neck thinner than the rest of the neck.

I necked down 40 pieces and used a .2415 inside neck reamer to remove the very little that was there. I then did 40 pieces where I did not use the inside neck reamer. I only got a chance to shoot half of each yesterday, as it was raining, and the range was closed due to lightning.

I did this - net .1005 @ 100 yards with the reamed neck

And this as well

These were the 2 best groups with no reaming.

I doubt there was any long term significance to the neck reaming, but nice to see a small hole none the less.

I fireformed 50 cases today. All formed well. I used 100gr Speer BTSP jammed 20 thou and 34gr Varget with CCI 450. I didn't want to use up my H4350. No pressure signs either.
