No - Go Small Rifle Primer Pocket

Does anybody know the “No - Go” pin measurement is on a small rifle Go - No Go gauge?

Reading the above charts one can see that the minimum diameter of a small rifle primer is .1745, exactly the same as the maximum diameter of the primer pocket, zero interference.

On the opposite end, the maximum interference is .0035

I guess that explains why I've had new, quality brass that was good for one load before primers falling out.

A friend of mine bought some pre processed brass and had several primer blow outs with his first 100 rounds. We measured the damaged brass and were getting from .1760 to .1900 in pocket dimensions. We measured a selective sample of the unloaded brass with results from .1730 to .1760 with several at .1755. Am I correct in pitching everything over .1750 or should I tighten it up to .1745? I have a set of pin gauges so checking them shouldn’t be too much of a hassle.

Primer pocket GO/NO gages are pretty cheap, 12 bucks each at Brownells. They come grooved for quick depth measurements. A lot faster and easier than measuring

Or have you somehow found the Golden Fleece? A reliable method for actually making too-large primer pockets smaller once again??

You may find that some brands of primers are a bit larger and will fit.

The question is should I pitch ‘em if they fail the .1750 or the .1745 pin? My shooting buddy did order the gauge.

I've used the gauge for about a year to judge when to pitch cases. I pitch cases if they fail the too large test. No sense in burning up your bolt face.

The tool listed above is the one I have. It is fairly new, and all I have tested it on is some once fired.223 Australian OutBack ADI brass. The go .172 side makes a good tight fit. The no-go .1735 side does not go in, if this helps in any way.

Nope, no Golden Fleece. Just tighten the spec from .1750 to .1745 as a no go.
