No go headspace gauge

Good afternoon,

Is there any way to use a no go headspace gauge as a feild gauge? I understand tape can be added to a go gauge ti be used as a no go. Can the same be done for a no go to feild gauge?

Ahh. Got it. So a feild headspace gauge is shorter than a no go. I learned something new. Anyone else know?

No - the field gauge is longer than a no-go, usually by 0.005-6" (approximately 2 layers of tape); the exact lengths are cartridge-dependent.
Thank you!! This is for a 6.5 creedmoor. I’ll try and find some dimensions. Much appreciated.

It’s an ar platform and it’s my understanding the bolts can vary in tolerance. It’s an aero high pressure bolt but I wanted to make sure it’s good. BCG and gauge will be here tomorrow.

This is correct- but it shouldn't vary enough to close on a no-go.
You can still use factory ammo, but should not reload cases when bolt closes on the no-go.

This is somewhat debatable for some- saying just neck size, yada yada...
For me, there's no reason to thumb my nose at potential case head separations. Keep headspace tight and minimize working the brass as much as possible not only for safety but brass life.

If it's closing on a no-go, either the barrel extension or bolt is out-of-spec and should be repaired or replaced.

From Brownell's:

If the bolt handle closes fully on the NO-GO gauge, repeat the test with a FIELD gauge. If the bolt does not close completely with this gauge, the headspace is on the long side, but the rifle can usually still be used with factory ammo, if the cases will not be reloaded and there are no other problems present. Never fire a gun that closes on a FIELD gauge. If it is fired, the chances are extremely high that you will get case ruptures.

That’s really good information. It is a semiautomatic so I doubt I’ll neck size. I’ve not checked the chamber/extension/bolt at all as of yet. It is a proof research barrel with aero bolt. I want to have my ducks in a row when my bolt and gauge arrived.

Thank you for your post!
