Nightrorce NXS vs Benchrest 12-42

Would appreciate the experience of shooters that have used both of these. I see the differences on the web site but would like the benefit of some hands on experience.

The BR has less glass in it so it's a bit clearer than the NXS...
.125 against .250 clicks in the older models...
The side focus is handy to have when your trying to be as still as possible, and reaching out to the end on a BR to dial it in will probably be noticed by whatever your shooting at unless it's just a paper target..

Yes the BR model has one less lense. I have both and ill be damed if you can tell the difference. In long range shooters many prefer the 1/8 clicks but at the same time you won't have as much moa adjustment in the BR model. Can't go wrong with any NF scope I have 4 myself.

The NXS model has a zero stop option that isn't available for the BR model. The zero stop is nice in low light. Brian Brown

I have or had both, now i only use the NXS. # 1 shorter, 2 lighter, 3 side focus, 4 1/8 clicks now, 5 longer eye relief, 6 10 min to the rev., 7 45 min of elevation. and i can't believe a BR is clearer than the NXS, i sure can't tell it but i will tell you it's clearer than a March.......jim

Only 40 minutes of elevation with the BR vs. 45 with the NXS. Something to think about when setting up your rifle for cold weather shooting at 1000 yards.

I have the 12-42 NXS on a 20 minute rail and have 40 up and 5 below with a 100 yard zero shooting a .308. I prefer my March 10-60 tactical over my NXS anyday.

Most of the pros and cons have already been gone over, I don't know what your going to be using it for, if it is BR then I would buy the br model as it caters to a benchrester if it was a hunting app then I wouldn't even consider the br model for all the reasons mentioned already, side focus, zero stop, what hasn't been mentioned is for a hunting app the turrets are to long on the br model, you have to remove them to adjust and I like 1/4 moa vs. 1/8 moa for hunting (just to much cranking) and is not needed for m.o.elk IMO unless your shooting well past a 1000 yds which is another discussion all in its own. And Lastly I have not seen this personally but have herd from others there have been issues with the BR model fogging in fiels conditions. I have 4 NF scopes and there glass is great but if the March glass is anywhere near as clear as my S&B PMII scope then there no contest there as my S&B has noticeably clearer glass then any of my NF scopes. I bought my self a 12-42 BR scope and my son and I bought my smith as a gift for all he does for us a 12-42 NSX, both new, bought less then a month apart and side by side on the 1K range neither one of us could tell any difference in early morning clear out type setting, we never tested in dusk conditions.

Either are great scopes. I started with the BRs, simply due to the 1/8s, but now that they are avail on the NXS, I have gravitated that direction. Yes, a bit extra $, but the extra elev, eye relief, and side focus are worth it to me. I'd also put down $100 that if you did a blind comparison, you could not tell the difference in quality of glass/view.

I had a March 10-60 for a while, didn't impress me, so it's on down the road. It was a fine scope, just not worth $.10 extra over a NF, IMO. A friends S & B 12-50 went tits-up two months ago and is still not back from Germany (yes the folks in NH could not figure out its issue, so back to the Motherland), also less than impressive considering the retail on them.

Looking down the line at the F-Class Nats, it was probably 80% NF, and most were NF BRs. Hard to argue with their success...

I have three NXSes and two BRs, and if you are paper punching, for the money I would buy two 10x50x60 Sightrons. They are as clear as the NF and have the side focus or parallax adjustment. I really like the NFs, but I'm telling you the truth about the Sightron.

One thing I have not noticed above is the NXS has a lock ring on the eye focus adjustment. The BR does not. This one fact alone makes me lean toward the BR's, and I do have 5 of them! The BR's are much quicker to focus, IMO. I have a tape on my hunting set up stating clicks required for distances. Again, works great for me!
