Nightforce Spoting Scope vs kowa 883

Has any one used both at 300-1000 yards and if so which is better and why?

How well does this new fluorite glass glass work at reading mirage?

I'm looking for a scope to help read wind. Watch flags, bullet splash of the shooter next to me and mirage at 300-1000 yards.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Kowa is what you see the most of on the line. I looked through the NF spotting scope and it had an extremely short eye relief.

I recently bought a Kowa 82 SV with a 25x LER eyepiece, based on the recommendation of several users here.. When I took it to the range I found the field of vision to be too wide, so I returned the eyepiece for 20-60X eyepiece. That one works really well for me. It has a short eye relief, but that isn't an issue for me.

The point I'm trying to make is this: Buy it from a dealer that carries both and has a good return policy. Try one and if you don't like it send it back, then try the other, until you find what works for you. Given the costs of these scopes shipping costs are negligible.

Good luck.

First off they are both good scopes.

I do think the Nightforce is better. It has more clarity than the Kowa. At my last match at Butner we put my Nightforce next to the Kowa 883( the Kowa is owned by one of the FTR US Team members) and you could really see the difference in the glass especially at the higher powers.

I really like the focus ring on it. It's very easy to reach and adjust from the prone position. As far as eye relief I haven't noticed a problem. The eye piece has a retractable ring that you can set for proper eye to lens position. Unlike the Kowa that has the standard piece of rubber that isn't adjustable.

I was at Blackwater a few months back and I could clearly see impact hits on Steel targets( painted yellow) at 1k. It was set at 70 power.

I have not had any issues reading mirage either. The nightforce is a great spotting scope. It will be the last one I ever own.

The Kowa 883 is the best of class in every way, and is better than any scope on the market, Even some at 3 times the cost. We could see folks on a beach 6 miles away and you could ID what they were wearing and what they were doing.
