Night Vision recommendation

Had an ATN ps40 (piggy back type Gen 3) that worked great for years. It quit on me - a wire got cut in battery compartment and not sure how to fix. Repair Shops anyone??
Any way, nightime coyote season is in full swing here in northeast-Maine ,New Hampshire- and I need a NV device ASAP. I guess Thermal is the latest and greatest, but I'm used to Night Vision and would rather that.
Any suggestions??
Support for ATN absolutely SUCKS. They cant help me.

Appreciate the Help,
Thanks

Bob

I got a ATN X-Sight day/night in the classifieds.

I have a nite optics 3rd gen d740 that's been super, never a hickup, just keeps plugging away.
Here is the info.
Nite optics d740 3AG, gen 3 autogated, 4x site advanced, NO NS 740 3AG.
I have this up for sale with a IR illuminator as I'm wanting another thermal.
Hit me up if you want more info.

If I were you, I would like to talk with someone knowledgeable, particularly in the case of high end stuff. I would probably start with calling Eurooptics or I have heard good things about the people in the link below. I don't have a lot of experience with night vision, but I have enough to know that a Streamlight TLR green light works better than lower end thermal or night vision.

I currently own a FLIR thermal, an AN/PVS-4 3rd gen, a MK7900 3rd gen ATN and a Pulsar digital. Not a fan of thermal, although the new stuff has gotten a lot better. You can see animals that you otherwise might not with thermal, but that don't necessarily mean you will get to shoot them.
I prefer my 3rd gen night vision with an illuminator. They don't give that away either, but it works flawless.
I have to say though that I am very impressed with the digital Pulsar. If it existed back when I started I probably would prefer it and for the initial layout of cash I definitely would have at least bought it first. You pretty much see the same as 3rd gen NV, but without the green tint.
Biggest advantage besides the reasonable price is the fact that it has higher magnification capability. Hard to zoom up even 3rd gen much over 4 or 5X because the screen gets "grainy". My digital goes up to either 15 or 20X and still looks pretty good. Still uses an illuminator to make their eyes shine. I cant really say about toughness and longevity...I have not had this digital for as long as I have had my NV. Coming up on 20 years of great service.
One final thing, the NV is pretty simple, the digital does a lot I don't need it to do and is complicated. In our modern gadget age some folks like that...I don't particularly need to go back to school to learn to use a scope!!!!

Msinc, What is the model of the pulsar digital you mentioned. Would you be able to identify and hit it at 400 yards.

Sorry for the delay...I have the N960. At 400 yards I will say that you probably wont be able to tell the difference between a fox, coyote or some idiots house dog running loose, but you could tell those from a deer. You can tell at 400 if you made a hit. But, a lot of that depends on what rifle you have it on. With a good flash hider or even better a suppressor to adequately hide the muzzle flash and a low recoil weapon then yeah. On something with recoil enough to knock you off the target and a lot of muzzle flash then no.

Have used thermal and NV and there is a place for each. Thermal is outstanding in detecting an animal at distances beyond ethical engagement ranges because of identification issues, but at least you know its there. NV lets you identify but detection is sometimes a lot later than desired. Have watched an opossum come in from 350 yds. with thermal not knowing what was coming, kept going to NV trying to identify but couldn't even pick it up until within 75 yds.
Some of the new thermal stuff (N-vision 18 and 35 mm) is awesome but pricey. It's to the point that you can use it helmet mounted for navigation then attach to rifle to engage target. Close to the point where it may be all you need.

Sightmark Wraith is the best bang for the money right now for digital NV. I use the 4x for more open fields out to 500 yards. For close in the 2X works better and has a wide field of view. The stock IR light will work up to 200 yards but a good IR (Sniper Hog or Wicked) will bring the scope to life.

What about eating more carrots? ;)

Buddy and I have both the Wraith 4-32 and 2-16. Either will work out to 200 yards out of the box. Both will run through batteries(AA) in cold weather( get 2500 mAh rechargeable). Because you need a light source, you can have a wash or white out issue if there are obstructions between scope and target. Last night I was sitting watching a hay field covered with crusted, wind polished snow. This made for what appeared through the scope to be at best 100 yards of visability, however when a coyote appeared at 150 yards it was a easy shot and could see it quite clearly. If I could afford it I would run a Bering optics super hogster(thermal) because fog, rain, or snow, grass, trees will interfere with IR performance. If identifying because of hunting regulation or to avoid shooting a dog, night vision is a better option. Remember digital optics have a refresh(screen) rate, similar to your tv, make sure both your target and the scope are not moving before shooting. Some hunters like to scan with a thermal and shoot with night vision. I have not found that coyote will spook from IR light, red or green will send them running in my area.

This is the one I'd recommend too. I've heard good things about it.

I have the 2-10. It is surprisingly good for the $$ if you get a Coyote Cannon IR light. Realistically get 250yds before clarity starts to get really grainy. You can see things further way, but you can't scan and pick things up without the help of a thermal. 150yds and under, the clarity/image quality on this is much better than most mid range thermals that my friends have.

Don't buy the FLIR PTS536. I bought one November 2019, used it twice and stored with no batteries. March last year pulled it out of the safe to get ready for a hog hunt. It did not even try to initialize. Totally dead like there isn't any battery in it.

Finally got around sending it last Oct before the 1 year warranty ran out. With no update at all from the customer service I got a notification from UPS that I have a package coming. That was 4 weeks ago. Two weeks ago package showed up.

As of today I still have not received any correspondence from the service department or customer service that my PTS536 has been repaired and shipped.

Sounds like their customer service is identical to Palmetto State Armory. I have a letter adressed to the CEO to mail this weekend.

It says I feel like a victim, not a customer.
