night force vs sightron

been saving monies for a newer scope----------locals get together and shoot at my farm. Have steels and paper set-up out to 800 yards.------------- I shoot 308 and 300wsm. target barrels, timney triggers, bench rest stocks with bedded actions. I desire a scope that is repeatable in turret movement. Should I have Moa, Mil, or inch turrets. Which sightron or nightforce, or maybe another brand would you shooters suggest for this old man that wants to have some fun with the younger group. Maybe even show them a thing or two.

The Nightforce is way ahead of the Sightron in every way if you could afford March it is better yet but is twice the price of the Nightforce, I really like the Nightforce NP-2DD reticle best.

I have 3 sightrons siii and couldnt be happier. The way you descrided your guns, target barrel and benchrest stock, I think any of the higher power sightrons wiuld work for you. I use the MOA reticle and like it the best, but I'm not sure it would do what you want. I think reticle choice is more of a personal opinion. My buddy has a NXS 5.5x22 and it is a very well made scope. If I had to go somewhere where the scope would be abused I would take the NF. Looking through both, neither me or him can tell a difference in the glass.

A buddy of mine has a Nightforce, I have a Sightron. After shooting side by side I think the Sightron has better glass. It tracks perfectly, I've never had a problem. Is the Nightforce tougher? Maybe. But in all the loading, unloading, shooting from various rests and positions, other people shooting the gun etc I've never had a lick of trouble with the Sightron. Same buddy is putting together a new lr varmint rifle, and is looking at Sightrons.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, but I don't agree with this at all, and I have and use both of these makes, several in fact of each.

The Sightron's may be good, but they are not way ahead of Nightforce in any way..
I have a few of each, but sure wouldn't sell the Nightforce scopes to replace them with Sightron's until they get at least as good, or equal to the Nightforce..

I don't think you will go wrong with either one. Based on personal experience. Moa-Moa would be my choice for the reticle and turrets. :)

Preach, the other poster said that NF is way ahead of Sightron in every way -- not the other way around.

As to the notion that Sightron isn't as good as the NF, I think they easily are equal to, if not better than, NF for repeatability of adjustments. In my opinion, that's the most important function of a scope, assuming the user needs to actually use the elevation and windage knobs on occasion. ;)

And regarding cost, Sightron is indeed way less expensive than NF, which has to be factored in unless cost is no object.

Too many newer shooters are too concerned with spending too much based on what some ostensibly more experienced (or simply more opinionated) shooters recommend. Browbeating a newer shooter into spending more than they need to does them a disservice. A NF or a March or a Schmidt & Bender isn't going to make a new shooter, or most shooters, a better shooter. Practice and understand riflecraft, and ALL of the issues therein, is what will enable a shooter to get better.

The top shooters will eat lesser shooters for lunch, regardless if the top guy is using a Cabela's branded scope and the new guy is using the new NF 15-55. 8)
