Nielson pumpkin users...

I'm having difficulty getting the proper cut on the shoulder. For some reason I think the cutter I have is not made for cutting into the shoulder, the angle just does not look right. And for some reason, maybe I heard it, I don't remember...but I believe I have a old cutter made before people cut into the shoulder? Did Don Nielson make different cutters?
My turner is only 3 years old. I called Kelbys and asked if Don Nielson made different cutters. I was told "I don't think so".

Edit: Just to clarify...if I adjust it to lengthen the cut all I end up doing is cutting a longer neck. The angle of the cutter never makes contact with the shoulder.

I have 2 PMA turners that do not do this.

Thanks

It will cut into the shoulder if you adjust it properly. Be careful with this step as you do not want to go too deeply. Knowing Don I'd say he never changed anything, as he gets it right the first time.

You turn with a pumpkin? How did you fit the cutter in the tool?

Thanks

Is your brass sized or unsized? Do a skim first to see how it is adjusted then get the proper depth you want. Use K&M and they are magical.

Not sure I understand your question. It's new brass that is expanded to fit on the turning mandrel.

The issue is that the notch on the cutter seems wrong. Maybe like its for a sharper angle shoulder.

Even if it is the wrong angle it should still be able to cut into the shoulder. You can move the pilot in or out with the set screw.

I own one and my cutter is at 30deg and touches the shoulder very nicely as it should.

Though I have seen one with a non angled cutter that from everything I have heard and read should not have been that way, the guy that had it asked Don himself about it at a match and the discussion got a little unfriendly and I's say a good part of that was due to the guy with the incorrect cutter is slightly on the abrasive side.

So yeah, I've seen one that was cutting into the shoulder and not angled correctly. If you'd like my 2cents, send it back to Kelbys and ask them to take a look at it, they've always been very helpful to me with my questions and modifications.

I'm going to try and take some pictures this weekend and then see about sending it in to Kelbys.

I have moved the pilot but as I said before it makes the neck longer because it just cuts the shoulder away in line with the neck rather than at a angle.

Thanks
