Niedner barrel info ?

I bought a barrel that is a 6.5 x 12 twist x 22 1/4' long. It is stamped 6.5 and 12 on the breech, and 6.5 on the muzzle. It is also stamped 1419 cb on the shank and NIEDNER RIFLE CORP DOWAGIAC.MICH on the side of the barrel about 8' from the breech. It is not stainless, has 6 lands and is what I call 'blue bright' inside. The contour is about medium heavy sporter,.690' at the muzzle, 22 1/4'). The shank is approx 2 1/2' long x 1.217' dia., and is center drilled about 1/2' deep.

Can anyone tell me about this barrel?

I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff, and will get it and then inquire about it. I bought it on the chance it was from A.O. Niedner.

Thanks for any info, Tom

Cheechako, I sent some pictures and text to the expert. Without seeing the pictures yet, his opinion is that it is probably the real deal. They did supply some barrels to other manufacturers, but are rare.

I appreciate your help. Tom

I just received 5 pages of info from the lead furnished by Cheechako. The barrel is an original unused barrel made in 1937 by Carlyn Behrman, one of A.O. Niedner's in-house barrel makers. Because of it's age and provenance, it would be defacing it to cut and chamber it. Worth more to me as it is, and possibly to anyone else who appreciates Niedner's work.

A.O. Niedner had considerable help when he made barrels with the 'corporation' markings, but they were cut under his careful direction and quality control. The work from his shop was very highly regarded. I believe A.O. did all the work on the schuetzen barrels while in Dowagiac and Carlyn Behrman probably rifled more of the modern rifle barrels that came out of the Corporation shop.I have owned two rifles with Corp. barrels...the 32-40 was super making groups of about .3' when the weather was good, the other barrel I never worked with for very long. It was a 25-35 on a hi wall and shot 117 boat tails into .6-.7 groups. I needed a down payment for a house and sold both guns to Michael Petrov in Alaska.

1st14, on those 2 rifles, the serial # and initials on the barrels would identify the year the barrels were made and the barrel maker. The stockmaker may also be identified and the stocks numbered.

Mr Petrov is very knowledgeable and shares his knowledge.

Thanks for jumping in. Tom
