In the knife making world there's a thing...”Nice Save” when someone posts a pic of a knife with a short blade, the implication being it was supposed to be larger but got messed up.
Now, I really can't blame anyone else because I'm the guy who cranked the handle but let's just say I was distracted and aggravated by the one person whom I can neither bar from my shop or ignore, and this person has a real knack for...pushing buttons? Well, enough said.
Anyway, I had a blank, and not a cheap one, I was working on for a guy who wants a specific profile. It started as a 26 inch by 1.250 straight blank. I had finished the profile, exactly I might add, and had a beautiful machine finish on it ready for the belt. When said distraction occurred I was intending to crank the handle and spin the saddle up to the tail stock but grabbed the cross feed instead and cut a deep groove into the barrel before I realized what I was doing.
But hey, now I have a nice 20 inch A1 profile AR15 barrel, a pencil barrel as they call it (it was the only way not to scrap this blank).
Hope you all had a good Thanksgving!
