NF NXS vs BR scopes? Side focus vs AO? What else?

I'm looking at a 12-42x56mm NF scope for long range varmint shooting and paper punching, but I'm not sure which model to go with the NXS side focus, or the AO BenchRest model?

I'm used to AO scopes, and the Benchrest scope is about $500 less, but I've been growing fond of a side focus Nikon that I won in a raffle last summer. What's your opinion on SF vs. AO for competition scopes?

Additionally, are there other differences between the NXS and BR scopes? Surely side focus vs AO isn't the only justification for a $500 price jump?

Varminterror: I have 3 Nightforce scopes, all benchrest models. For my purposes the BR better suits my needs. At the present time until (?) the BR is 1/8 moa clicks, the NXS is 1/4. To me very important for the longer distances that I compete in, out to a maximum of 500 meters. I've always preferred screw-on lens caps and turret covers, both standard on the BR, not on the NXS. The side focus is handy I will admit, have a Zeiss with side focus, but for me, the additional cost is not worth it: I have no problem with the objective bell adjustment. Some claim the BR is slightly clearer than the NXS because of the non side focus, can't prove it by me. I do prefer the 12-42x ( have 2) over the 8-32x (have 1), and all 3 are with the NP-2DD reticle. Whatever model you choose, you will like it. ;)

If you can save money with the BR Id take that, The side focus is nice, but not a must unless your shooting multiple timed targets, like say for a tactical competition. Lots of cool stuff you can get with $500 like quality mounts, level, ballistic app etc...

First consider what you want to do with the scope. Shooting at known distances like benchrest, 600yd matches or out to 1K I'd go with the Benchrest model. Set the AO for the range and shoot. If shooting at unknown distances like hunting or PD shooting the side focus model is a lot faster to use. I grew up using the front AO scopes so it's no big deal to me. Just don't believe the yardage settings on the AO. Dial in what suits your eye.
