Newlon Die FL, Bushing

Since there is a wealth of information on this web site from gents who have ACTALLY done projects with viable feedback I would like to ask a couple of Questions:

I have a 6mm Wild cat based off the the 243 case. It has been a pain in the butt getting the base or web sized and the shoulder bumped back when the need arises. I have single stage press and have to spin out and spin in a diffrent die to perform what I think should be one operation. Full Length sizing. My Harrel 6BR die works SOOOOO good I thought I would like to do the same with the wild cat. In talking to Lynwood he mentioned that I could get the Newlon run my reamer into it and then send it to have it Case hardend. This in turn would shrink the internal demensions enough to properly size the brass for ease of loading. One die perfect fit. I really trust Lynwood and I have ordered a die. In talking to the gentleman at newlon he mentioned that there other ways to accomplis this same result to include some of the hard finish coating available.
If you have done this I would like to know your results and what proccess you used to come away with .002 or so reduction in size minus getting a whole nother reamer.,$$$$)

Thank you for your feedback and your results.

Lynwood is a very good man. He actually sent my friend a measure, said try it, if he was happy with it he was to send him a check. This was a while back at a benchrest shoot, so I'm positive he doesn't do this anymore. Anyway... his advise to you is sound. It is a common practice in the ppc world to turn your chamber reamer into a die then have it case hardened for a perfect fit. The catch with this is the amount of shrinkage is not a science. Different batches of the same metal with have slight variations. It takes experience, practice, and some inevitable muff ups; in short, it's old school.
With the progression of smithing machinery that now incorporates computer program input, anything is achievable. It would be my stance to take advantage of this. Redding will make you a complete custom die made from either three of your fired brass or your reamer drawing. Redding Custom Die
You can get a FL die, and you can have it made for neck bushings. You'll have to look at the cost sheet and determine what you want.
Just something to think about

Donovan And Heik

Both of you have supplied excellent feed back. Dave Tooley is a very respected name in this bussiness. So It appears I may be sticking my neck out on this one in trying it the way I intended.
I too have a Harrel Measure from Lynwood and he did the same thing for me. Pay me if you like it and if not send it back. At that time he said he had never lost any money. The man bleeds trust. Goes to show you that the shooters he deals with are damn good people.
That makes sense about the amount of shrinkage or reduction not being an exact science. Im no metaligist,SP?) but ive done my fair share of Brazing, welding gringing,& cutting metal. Heat and the time it takes for a steel to cool all plays a part in how the finished product turns out.

Thats two good replies. has anyone else have some good isite?

Thanks guys.

I may be wrong but the Newlon dies were already hard and would need to be cut with a reamer made to cut them. I know my smith does standard dies and has reamers for them.

You might want to call Neil Jones and see if he can help you.

Good luck. Shaun.

I called Newlon prior to ordering and nothing was said about Hardening the Die prior to shipping to me. He has two types one being 416SS and the other I belive is 2L. I will have look to confirm on that one. He mentioned a regualer chamber reamer is to be used. Nothing special. So we shall see.

The Newlon dies are not prehardened. I live about an hour from Troy and have known him for many years...fine fellow. If you can get the concentricity that you need from your current setup, and you are using a press that is bushed down to accommodate standard dies, you might try a lock-n-load adapter from Hornady to speed up die changes. As to using a chamber reamer to make a FL die, and counting on heat treat shrinkage to make it small enough, as much as I like and respect Lynwood, I would not count on that working every time. Jim Carstensen has a system where he cuts a thin walled chamber and then presses on an undersized sleeve to shrink it. You might give him a call. I have seen favorable reports on dies that he has made that way. Another source for a custom die might be Hornady.

The Newlon die blanks, that I use, are made of 12L14 and cut like butter. For the money you can't get a better start towards a great 'custom' die!

We used the Newlon die for our custom 30-47's. We also had to buy a resizing die reamer and then have the die hardened after reaming. Not what you wanted to hear I am sure. The dies are not hardened and will score yopur brass until they are.

Yes your right its not really what I wanted to hear. I recieved my Die from Troy on Monday., great service) I went straight to my Man Shed, you have one too dont you?) opened the box slipped my reamer in and sent it right off to my Gunsmith. He will ream it with my chamber reamer and send it back to me. I plan to move forward with this. What the he%* Ive spent more money on worse things than this. I will send it to Lynwoods GUY and have him Case harden it. I sure hope this works but at this point im prepared if it does not.
Ill let you know how it turns out. At The expense of getting a reamer made for sizing, I might as well have Redding Hornady or Forster make me a costome die.
I would like to thank everyone for replying, I think Im prepared now for the end result if nothing else comes of it.
