newbie rifle builder questions

im truing and rebarreling a win model 70 wssm. basically im doing this build to learn. i want the rifle to turn out great but if it turns out ok and i learn im ok with that. so upon taking the 25wssm barrel off finding 28tpi was my first suprise.

basically im wanting a thread or article that i can read until i know what to do. i dont want to be spoon feed info but im having trouble finding a good article detailing the process.

You should have one of these. Good luck and happy shooting.

i have none, my friend owns a machine shop whis everything a machineest could want. i have no doubt if i get to where i can tell him "make the machine do this" he can do his part.

i took it there last night and did just that. he said "wow there is alot more to doing this than i planned. i have to do some figuring and we will do it some other time.

i just felt kind of bad for not having knowlege for him to go off of prior to the meeting

Gee Wizz! Does that mean there might actually be a place for gunsmiths/custom rifle builders in this world, after all? It's not as simple as some make it out to be. And, it's as easy or as hard as you make it. Depends on how closely you look at the details!

i have no question that this is a job better suited for a custom rifle builder. i had a 260 built by aj brown that turned out amazing, but i didn't learn anything about what it takes to build it. i figured the only way to learn is to dig in and do it. i cant take enough time off work to go to a school or anything like that. im in no way belittleing what custom rifle builders do, im wanting to learn what they do.

He/you needs to do some reading/research on chambering. Its not as intuiitive as one might think.

A good machinist can screw it up if not up on the tricks of the trade.

On Benchrestcentral under the gunsmithing section, Jackie had pictures of his chambering process.

Here's an instructional post I made a while back.

the 25 shot pretty well. it was sub moa but not way sub moa like a target rifle. it liked the 87gr vmaxes the best.

in indiana we can only deer hunt with pistol cartriges. instid of listing legal cartriges they listed specs. so a wild cat cartrige came out maxing out those specs called the 358bfg. mabe from 25wssm brass it sends a 180gr bullet at 2700ish fps. not bad for a shotgun state. so thats what im building

there was no sealent on the threads
