Newbie Reloading Question

Sizing as the instructions state will allow your rounds to fire safely in any rifle of the same caliber and using the measurements from the load books. Load books seating bullet lengths in Over All Lengths which isn't the best for really accurate rounds do to bullet tips being off. In reloading your in most cases looking for a custom fit for your chamber and barrel. It is a very safe hobby as long as you follow the directions , ask questions when unsure of something , try calling the manufacturer , ask questions on forums . As time goes on you'll try different dies , gauges and every new gadget out there. Hope you have space in your gun cabinet . Load Safe.

Totally agree Chris. It's best to look completely around the COAL # and go with CBTO # when working up a load unless the mag. length comes into play.

Swisski,
Welcome to the forum!.... you have been given a lot of good advice. Make sure you lube evenly, each case the same amount and as others mentioned the same dwell on your sizing stroke, No lube on shoulder or neck is needed or wanted. Sounds like your off to a great start as a new hand loader best of luck sir.

When I was going down that rabbit hole for benchrest , I removed the
ejector spring to a weaker spring causing the ejector to stay flush with bolt face . The thinking behind this is the ejector was putting pressure on the base of the case , causing it to misalign.

I just removed the ejector completely.

OP: On the Hornady headspace tool, there's 2 different bodies (I refer to them as short and long.) The short is meant for checking to the bullet ogive, where nothing will extend very far into the tool (just the bullet ogive to tip.) The other is meant to check case base to shoulder, and is longer to account for the case neck and bullet [possibly] extending up into the tool.

I didn't remove the ejector completely , it leaves a hole in the bolt face . I like the RCBS Precision Mic because it drops the case in a threaded drum supporting the case body , the second drum is threaded from the top measuring the shoulder ( datum line ) and a third is used for the Ogive setting. It also comes with a adjustable plastic bullet for a ballpark ogive setting , I found it to be a waste of time. The mic. is very easy and accurate to use

I saw that you didn't, which I why I mentioned it. Not sure it makes a difference, as a spring that's weak enough to not allow the elector to protrude is not going to prevent brass from flowing into the ejector hole anyway (if that was your intent.)

But either way, you get rid of the ejection, which makes brass a lot easier to find.

I just didn't want any grime in the tunnel , I don't have to chase my brass, just lies in the follower. That's about the only plus , I used the spring from a bic lighter cut to size , worked good.
