Hi All,
I'm planning on participating PRS Rimfire Production Class matches for the first time and have lots of questions. Online forums and Youtube (X-Ring, Pursuit of Accuracy, and Womfat) have been very helpful but I'm still a bit overwhelmed. I just bought a CZ 457 Varmint MTR and am thinking about getting a DNT The One 7-35X56 FFP scope. According to the spreadsheet on http://bit.ly/3YX8gVN this rifle/scope combination should qualify for PRS Rimfire Production, but if you recommend another scope, please let me know. As far as I can tell, this rifle/scope is just over the $1500 MSRP limit for NRL base class for 2025 (although if the limit goes to $1600 in 2026, it might qualify assuming the MSRPs don't go up much). I've installed an Arca rail (only involved drilling holes without reshaping/inletting the stock).
I would greatly appreciate it if you could please take a look at the following questions:
1. May I attached a cheek riser (I'm using a 30 MOA rail so the scope sits high)? If so, can the riser be screwed into the stock or do I have to use adhesive/straps?
2. Can I use an aftermarket firing pin and/or mainspring (I'm getting misfires with Eley Match)?
3. Can I replace the plastic magwell with an aluminum one (I've read lots of reports of the plastic magwell breaking)? Similarly, may I use aftermarket bottom metal and an extended mag release? The November 2024 PRS MD Report said that "You may replace/upgrade the bottom metal" so maybe the answer is yes to the previous questions?
4. I measured the headspace with Whidden gauges and it's just over 0.044", so it should be fine, but may I add bolt shims to bring it closer to 0.043" or less for Eley (shouldn't make much difference, but would be good to know)?
5. May I use a lighter trigger spring? It sounds like aftermarket springs are allowed in the Production Class according to the November 2024 PRS MD Report, but I've heard people say no internal parts may be replaced (maybe this is from before a rule change?).
6. May I add a Harrell tuner to the non-threaded muzzle? This is mainly to move the balance point forward. The November 2024 PRS MD Report said that one could add a brake or suppressor on a threaded muzzle, but it's not clear if adding a weight to the end of a non-threaded barrel is ok. If an adjustable tuner is not allowed, may I just clamp a big weight on the end of the barrel?
7. What matches do you recommend in the Western New York and Southern Ontario area?
I'm sorry about the long list of questions. I greatly appreciate and am grateful for your patience in looking at them!
Thanks,
John
