newbie here with a new to me savage 260

Hey everyone i am new to this forum and longer range shooting in general. I picked up a new to me Savage 11 trophy hunter in 260 remington. So i thought i would come in here and look for some good info on things. It has a set of weaver mounts but no scope rings or any glass. The stock has been bedded and barrel floated.

If you are not reloading yet, now's the time to get started. You will be able to squeeze every bit of accuracy that barrel can give. You picked a good cartridge, just maximize it's potential.

Now all you need is a good set of dies, brass, and bullets with some H4350 or in a pinch IMR4350 and get to loading some up. Always start low and work up, if you get someone's load off the net make sure you can substantiate the load or don't use it. Welcome to the forum. What kind of scope are you going to use?

Welcome. Good article on 6.5 cartridges with info on the 260.

I haven't decided on the scope yet. I may go with one of the cheaper vortex scope, the crossfire or maybe a viper if I can find a good deal on one.

maybe some hunting. I am just getting into this bolt gun stuff, so i will start off small with some informal matches and if I can do okay with it i will try to do some of the bigger matches.

The 260 is a great cartridge. It has won at the local level and the national level and at levels in between. There are a lot of loading components available for this great cartridge. Do not be distracted by the "Camo and Ammo" distractors. It will serve you well.

So i am starting to look for glass for this thing. It has weaver mounts on the receiver so i will be using those. Is there a reason to spend more on some rings than other ones?

Burris Signature Zee Rings. Pick your scope first. They come in 1" and 30mm.

If you are really wanting something half way decent look at the sightron SIII 8-32x56 with the crosshairs ,don't get the mil dots as theyare way too big for my liking. Or get a bushnell 4200 or elite in ay least 6-24 or 8-32. I know a guy trying to sell a 4200 6-24x40mm for a decent price if still available. The bushnells are 1 inch tubes so you would half to get different rings. You would really like the SIII I suggested as it is excellent quality for the price.

The vortex PST scopes are great for the money. You can pick them up used at great prices too. I'm guessing informal matches as in steel safari type stuff?

I would also suggest grabbing an egw base with some elevation built in. Probably 20 moa. That would get you beyond 1k if you plan on going that far.
I am able to zero my 6br at 100 and go to 1100 with room to go but that's as far as I have.

here she is... Now just to get it sighted in and find the best load for me..

You are going to really like that scope. The gun looks good to me. If you need dies I would consider forster as they are good dies and you get an inline seater in the set. That keeps the seated bullet straighter and hopefully better accuracy.
