Newbie - 30BR ??

I am starting to think 30BR now instead of 6PPC or 6BR for a 100/200 gun. Is recoil really that bad? I've shot a 308 a few times off the bench and spent some time with a 270,free recoil I guess you all call it). The 270 did get me in the nose twice and I did hurt some the next day! Can't imagine a 112 gr 30 recoiling much more than a 6mm 107. Am I wrong?

Thanks,

Mark

If you are going to shoot Score, then a 30 BR is a good choice. If you are going to shoot Group, a 30 BR won't win you many fake-wood trophies.

I agree with almost everything Cheechako posts, mainly because he knows his sh... But I don't agree with this one, the 30BR won the HV grand of the IBS 200/300 Group Nationals last year...and took second as well. Now this isn't the 100/200 Nat's but still a bunch of excellent shooters shooting PPC's were bettered by two hot shooting 30BR's,Dean Breeden and Harley Baker). Not too many folks have been able to tame the cartridge in a light gun, but it'll shoot with the ppc's in a heavy, teen aggs have been shot). The recoil is very manageable in a 13.5lb rifle, it just takes a little getting used to if coming from a ppc. If you are coming from a 308 or 270, you won't even know it's kicking at all.

I did not know that. I don't remember seeing a trophy given to a 30 BR shooter at an NBRSA match even though some pretty good shooters have tried it.,I'm sure someone will tell me about one that did):o

I stand corrected.

And I always read all your posts. You know your stuff better than I do.

At the local range they alternate group and score every two weeks. Does the 30BR not have a reputation for grouping?

The 30 BR groups very well indeed but may never take on the PPC in group shooting for one main reason..recoil. There are a bunch of shooters that compete with a light rifle only, because it qualifies for both classes, and a properly put together LV 6ppc will shoot just as well as a heavy 6ppc. Staying on top of your game with one rifle is hard enough, two rifles well...If it were me, I would make sure that whatever action I chose had a 308 boltface so I could opt for a PPC or a BR barrel. That way even if you don't like your first choice, another barrel in either caliber is just a phone call away. Even though I have a strong affinity for the 30BR, I really don't think it will hang with a well tuned 6ppc. I think the lack of recoil in the PPC helps immensly in the shooting of tiny groups. The reason I like the 30 so much is the fact that it stays in tune so much better than a PPC. I struggle from day to day trying to keep a PPC shooting well, while a 30BR just stays shooting all the time. I've never shot a zero with my thirty, close but no cigar), but once I find a load that shoots ones and two's, I'm done, none of this changing loads two or three times in a day to keep it shooting. I think the top notch 6ppc group shooters keep on top of the tune better than the average group shooter, and that's what wins the matches. With a 30BR, you can all but eliminate the tuning aspect during matches and concentrate on reading wind flags. I'm not suggesting that a 30BR is going to win the Super Shoot next month, too many awsome shooters with well tuned PPC's in attendance, but don't be surprised to see them give a good showing.
