Newbie......20 VarTarg Questions??

I am new to the forum and new to the 20's, so bear with me.

I have a couple questions on the 20 VarTarg..... I have the opportunity to pickup a lightly used Cooper Montana Varminter in 20 VarTarg for under $1200. When I say lightly used, it has less than 30 rounds thru it.

1st, What is the proper procedure to form the brass? I have been told that you just run 221FB brass thru a 20 VT FL resizer and your good to go. Then I had another source tell me to get a 17Mach IV "Form die". The form die takes it down to 20 cal. After you run your 221FB brass through the 17Mach IV form die, then full length resize through the 20VT die. Trim your brass to the correct trim length, chamfer inside and out with the chamfer tool. Load and fireform using a normal 20VT load.
Which is the best/proper way?

My 2nd question, is on the resizing die. The only 20 VT FL die that Redding lists, is a "bushing" die. I have used regular FL resizing dies for years in other calibers and am confused on the "bushing" die. How do I know which bushings to order for the 20 VT? I have no loaded case to measure??

Thanks in advance for your help and input.

I've recently had a Rem 700 VSSF rebarreled in .20VT. I called Todd Kindler at the Woodchuck Den....he is the originator of the .20VT. I ordered a stanard,non-bushing) FL die set from him and had it in a week....so there is another choice. I run .221FB brass through the .20VT sizing die...after prepping the brass, of course. Make sure you lube the cases well before sizing. Todd recommended, and I use, Imperial Sizing Wax for lubricant. His number is 330-897-0614.

Has anyone tried a 20VT body die followed by a 20VT bushing neck die? Or, do you really need a standard FL die? I know you can't size the whole neck with bushing dies but I have used a body die then bushing neck die to go from 6BR to 22BR and it worked good.

I did mine with a body die. I bought the Redding Match neck die set, which includes body die, neck bushing die, and competition seating die.

Ran them into the body die, then necked with .227 bushing, loaded, and have been killing pdogs ever since. Don't make it tougher than it has to be. :)

Can anyone tell me what the loaded neck diameter is on the 20 Vartarg. I am just wondering if the reamer I have is going to give me the clearance I want. Thanks

I just had a 20VT built up on a Remington 700 action using a 12 twist PacNor. We ordered a Sendero taper that would, didn't know it at the time) finish out to 28". So, what the hell, let's shoot it. I perused load data on this site and saw that AA2200 was listed and showed to have the greatest velocity. Cases formed using the Redding 20VT body die and FL die were loaded to 20.5 gr AA220 with Sierra 32 BK bullets. The load was freaky accurate but only chronoed at 3440 fps. When I cleaned the rifle I noticed a "sooty" look to the barrel. I then had 4" cut off the barrel and tryed it again. Same load for 10 shots. Average velocity went to 3542. Average Deviation was 9 fps. The 10 shot group was .624",opened up by 1 bullet that was just touching the rest of the group). The two 5 shot groups to follow were in the low fours. I still want more speed. I have Vit 120, 1680 and Benchmark left to try. Anyone have any Benchmark data for the 20VT?

I have almost formed 500 cases using a body die and bushing die.

I had to face a bit faced off my shell holder in order to get the die low enough in the press. I have a nice crush fit now, and should be fire forming in a couple weeks.
