New varmint rig, now to pick a chambering

Okay thanks to all that have helped, I was on the fence with several of these options and I'm now down to 2. I came across a great deal on winchester 243 brass, over 1200 pieces of it once fired. Price was less than 2 blue boxes so I couldn't pass it up. That leaves me debating the 6SLR vs the 6 Competition match. I dont know that the competition match is worth the fire forming especially for a shorter barrel length but then again I dont know much about the cartridge. I like to long neck of the SLR so that I can seat different wait bullets without worry and play around with everything from the 70-105 range with the same throat. Am i heading in the right direction for any of you that do own or have owned a 6SLR. Also might need to rent/buy a reamer as my smith doesn't have a reamer for either chamber. Any one have one with a shorter throat so I can load some light weight bullets, or heavier but still be at mag length?

Let me submit a simple one, maybe one you already own.

Take the existing .223 and try the Federal Fusion MSR 62gr commercial load.

It shoots nicely in my Mossberg MVP .223 Predator and all of my 1:9", 1:8" AR Uppers, 16"-24". The bullet is more highly sophisticated than the average, with considerable emphasis on good expansion and weight retention. The MVP uses an AR Drop Zone 3-12x40 with BDC reticle and left focus/parallax knob. It should be used in conjunction with an LRF, angle compensation preferred.

Many of the reviews shown above testify to its use as a Coyote load.

It is also marketed as a deer load, but I would try to be conservative about longer shots on larger deer. This load has 'cover with a quarter' accuracy at 70yd for my 16" lightweight AR Upper with the SPARC II dot and 2X magnifier, bench/bipod.

70yd is my deer hunting zero distance, dropping back down to zero again at my personal distance limit for this load on deer. The accuracy is still there at 175-200yd, but I think the terminal performance might be marginal by then. Inside 70yd, I'd expect up to 2" low, beyond 70yd, I'd expect it to shoot up to 6" high until it drops back down to the second line of sight crossing.

Shoot and confirm these drops; barrels vary.

A std 243 shooting 65vmax, 70BK, or 75vmax will put a hurtin' on smaller varmints and coyotes. 55g-58g at 4000 in that std 243 9.25 twist if you really wanna see splat.

I have a .243 Ackley that is a 12 twist that feeds like a dream from AI mags and is stupid accurate. Trim rarely, and you already have the brass.

That being said, a straight .243 is tough to beat with a good barrel. I had a Savage 9 twist that shot 105's great, and the 80 Berger outstanding.

The 6x47L also feeds really well from the AI mags, and shoots virtually the same velocity as my .243 did.

Good luck making up your mind...lots of good choices...

What barrel life difference do you all think I'll see between a straight 243, a 243SLR, and a 243 competition match. Keep in mind I wont be shooting long strings through any of them. Shorter barrel may mean use of faster powder for all 3 as well.

I haven't personally ran faster powder through my comp but the way I understand with what I've read is if you burn h4350 as a prs style gun (long fast strings of fire). You can expect around 2500. Again I don't know. But something like what you are wantin I would say probably more. From what I read out of the three 6 comp match is still gonna give you more barrel life. I was gonna build the SLR but my smith said I was stupid as hell if I wanted to do 6mm and did something other than the comp. so far couldn't be happier but not a lot of rounds through mine yet.

I have been contemplating building a 6 BR as well but have been holding off due to the feeding issue. There is a guy in Wyoming that makes a follower/spring/spacer for AI mags that feeds like a dream. I think it is TS custom guns. Has me thinking ... but bottom metal and mags aren't cheap.

I have decided to build a a dedicated varmint/target gun. I currently have mostly larger hunting guns for whitetails and on up and want to dust off a savage action that has been laying around and get something thrown together that i can punch paper and coyotes with. Keep in mind that the coyotes out my way are quite large, not that a well placed round out of my 22-250 wont do the job i just want something more accurate with somewhere in the 75-125 grain bullets. I think I'd like to go 6mm as I currently have a 223,22-250,270,7mm-08,7mm WSM, 308, 300 WM. I'm leaning towards a 6mm BR or one of its improved versions, or a 6-6.5x47. I want to use lapua brass and plan to shoot it a good bit so barrel life is somewhat important. Rifle will have a box mag so seating length is limited but wouldn't be an issue with either of those calibers. Other than mag length and 308 bolt face though I am open to other options if someone has a better idea. Rifle will likely get a 22-24" barrel to keep it compact for varmint hunting.

I just got a model 12 HB Savage in 22-250, shoots into 1 hole with 36.5gr of Varget, tough to beat the accuracy to dollars spent ratio. love that soo much I thought why not try one in 243, varget 70 gr ballistic tip, into one hole. Wonder which caliber my nexy savage HB will be in... have a nice day.

Recently a member "Timeout" has outlined the modifications necessary to get a bolt action to feed reliably with the BR/Dasher cartridges.

Take a look at the 6XC it sounds like what you are looking for, feeds well, great velocity and accuracy. Lots of guys here shooting it.

The case with the least powder should give the best barrel life. Ratio of powder wt. to bore diameter. If I buy a new barrel it will be a 6BRX, probably a 12 twist for 75-85 gr bullets.

Barrels have threads for just this reason.......;)
I already have many barrel burners and I'm building another currently. Want this one to hold up. A month ago it was going to be a 6slr for sure, now with the new lapua 6.5 creedmore brass coming out it may be a 6mm creedmore.

I have a Procharger on my pickup truck, and my neighbor drives a minivan, guess who's commute is less mundane. "Even though my engine will probably not last as long as his" If you get a chambering that has a very limited life span and use it to punch paper, then that is retarded. But if you use it for it's intended purpose and take shot's that you would not even think of taking with a factory offering, then it has served it's purpose. For sake of argument in round numbers, if a barrel has a lifespan of 1000 rounds and you make 500 kill's, and 250 of those were made possible because of that chambering that is quite the bargain at least in my book anyways.

You have a point there and I can't argue what you are saying, maybe one day I'll do both, I'm planning either a 7RUM, 30/338 Lapua, or a 30/378 on another build right now. Need to run the numbers on each caliber. I'd say it is safe to say those are all supercharged :)

Super charged and nitro fueled! ;)
