New varmint hobby...

I live in Michigan and I am interested in trying Varmint hunting
,coyote & fox) DNR laws state we use .22 rimfire or shotgun, I have a Rem. 870, 12ga-3"mag. Please suggest shot size, Choke, and reading material and calls I might need to get started in this new venture.

Welcome to the site!

Bummer on the state restrictions...I thought California was mean.

Given those restrictions, in 22 rimfire I would go with a 22MAG,22WSM) using the Remington 33 grain V-Max ammo. I have used this ammo and it is great-never killed a coyote with it but I wouldn't hesitate out to 150 yards. It makes a mess out of rats, digger squirrels)!

For your 12 gauge go with a #4 buck shot-I have dropped dozens of dogs with this set up in the Nevada desert sage. This combo reaches out to 65 yards with authority.

If you have a few extra dollars get Dead Coyote Hevi-Shot #4 buck shot. Hit's even harder and buys you about 10-20 yards.

Post pictures!

MrM Good advice!
I dont shoot a 22 mag vary often It is not my idea of a good coyote gun. I would hold it to no more than 100 yards.
I shoot a bennelly BE2 3 1/2 with 3 inch Dead coyote or T shot.
With a carlson dead coyote choke tub. that will kill a dog dead at 75 yards no problem.
Good Luck and good Hunting Kevin

Having a 'stand-off' with a coyote, while you have a loaded gun in hand, are you kidding me? At that range a .22 LR in the brain-pan would have ended the whole affair.

That's not completely true. Those are the night time restrictions.

For more information, see the DNR link. Coyote Regulations

Correction: You can use a centerfire throughout the state, OUTSIDE of firearm deer season, but still WITHIN coyote season.

During the normal hunting season you can use a centerfire. Also, you can shoot coyote outside the normal season if they are deemed a pest. The michigan laws are a little confusing at times, so the best thing to do would be to call the Conservation Officer for the county you plan to hunt and ask him questions directly.
