New toy

I just got an rem721 in 222.I dnt know much about the 721 other than its an older model rem. What can you all tell me about it. Cant wait to shoot it I have wanted a 222 for awile. Thanks

the 721/722 are the first of the 700 actions, they are very good. if you ever want to "tweek" it, it is just like the 700 as far as the steps that can be taken and the results are similar

I owned one - got it when I was 19. Yours is a 722, the 721 was for 30-06 length cartridges.

It was my first varmint only rifle, and I gave a lot of woodchucks terminal tummy aches.

You will like it - they are very good rifles.

Catshooter just corrected me its a 722.And I will be shooting it today with the old factory ammo that came with it.I will let you all know how it does later.Sorry I dnt know how to post pics.It is in pretty good shape. The scope(tasco) and bi-pod are very out of date.I will be putting on a Nikon first thing after I clean it this morning.

How much range should I expect catshooter?

If you load 50gr plastic tipped bullets (50gr BlitzKing, or V-Max) expect ~300 yds against woodchuck sized animals - if you use the 50gr TNT (DON'T use the 55 TNT), expect the same 300 yds.

If you use soft point bullets, expect 250-ish.

If you shoot the Sierra 52/53gr Match bullets, cut that down to 150 yds - they will often zip right through a woodchuck without expanding at all.

If you shoot Prairie Dogs, any range is good if you can hit them - Prairie Dogs don't take much killin'.

I recently, picked up a Rem 788 in 222 with a, get this one, 19" factory barrel. Why someone would wack it off to that length is beyond me. I put an 11 degree crown on it because it was cut straight and with a magnifier I could see burrs at the edge of the rifling. I just started doing some loading for it and I hope I don't have to replace the barrel. I'm going to start with IMR4198 and Sierra 52gr match bullets.

This is what an older sewer piped' 722 can do with cheap Federal Classic ammo.

722 in 222 was the first rifle I bought with my own money back in 84. It had a fajen stock and the rest was factory. It shot .5-.75 for along time. I figured over the years I put roughly 10k rnds thru it and last year at 200 yds if you could hit a soft ball all 5 times you were doing good. Today it has a new Mcgowen bbl and a new stock. I have only shot 5-5shot groups thru it the largest .75 smallest .328 at 100yds. You will be very happy with your new purchase. Heres what it looks like today.

The 722 was the first rifle ever chambered for the 222. Mike Walker was the engineer that designed both (with help) the rifle and cartridge. It's not based on any other cartridge. I bought one a few years ago and sold it last year, along with a Tikka 222 I picked up. It was very accurate, but I did not like the stock. Mine liked around 24 grs of BLC2 and 50 and 55 gr bullets. Good luck with your's. Barlow.

update After I change the scope and fixed the mount(somebody tryed to file a slot into it) then I cleaned it real good. This gun is a real shooter. And that's with factory ammo.I will be reloading for it soon thanks to RW who sold me a nice set of Forster dies. I will try to figure who to post pics later. Thanks for all the info and you all were right I really like this gun.
