New Toy (Antique)

dixieppc

In search of one small hole...
Got a New (Antique) toy today. Got a Belding & Mull Visible Powder Measure. It came in the Original Box with Original Packing and All Parts and Pieces including the Original Instructions. The unit is in perfect working order and shows no wear except a dull finish on parts brought on by age. The window is the original glass which is the thickness that glass isn’t made any more (which means don’t break the original). The only thing that doesn’t appear to be original is the two screws holding the glass in. They appear to be nylon replacements.

I won’t be using it because I have a Harrell but I will probably attach it to my wooden tool chest just to enjoy looking at. The best thing? Paid $20 for it.

Regards…..

You don't want that old junk hanging on your box. I will give you 30.00 to rid yourself of it. LOL

jonbearman,
Tell you what, I'll will the ugly old thing to you....

joshb,
It is my understanding that Belding & Mull made/make two versions of this measure. One for black powder and one for smokeless powder. The one for black powder has a brass hopper where the one for smokeless powder has a clear hopper like the one I have.

Regards....

Mine has a brass hopper. Never had a clue that was for black powder. Been using it for decades. They were made right near my old hunting camp near Clearfield Pa. Grew up with the things and they sure work well.

Stopped using mine when I got the Hornady electronic gizmo. Now it's feelings are probably hurt.

From my understanding, throwing smokeless powder in the brass hopper unit is not a problem but throwing black powder in the one with the plastic hopper is a problem. I think it might have something to do with static and the plastic with black power. But why wouldn't you have the same problem with smokeless powder???

I had wondered the same thing, and was lead to a page where an experiment had been conducted in regards to static with both black and smokeless powder.
It appears that smokeless powder is non conductive.

Here's a link to the experiment if you have a few minutes to read it.

The B&M measure works very well with the longer grain extruded powders.
I know that my Harrell works great with N133 but does not like Varget one bit. Maybe I ought to actually use this Belding and Mull with some Varget and see.

I,ve got one exactly like it I bought new in 1968 and I still use it. Back then it was the BR standard. It does throw stick powder better than my Harrels.
Try using it you'll like it.

I have been using a Belding and Mull since the mid 70's I like the ability to visually double check the powder volume before dumping it into the case or onto the pan to trickle up to a set weight when loading hunting or short range high power loads.

Also have a Harells which gets used a lot on spherical powder.

You may want to Loctite the sholdered screw for the lever, mine would work loose until I put some medium grade Loctite on it.

I started reloading in the early 80's and it was only about a year till I bought my first one. I have 4 or 5 now. One of them even has a aluminum hopper. Its the only one I've ever seen (I'm sure there's more out there). I also have my pap's B&M but its pretty wore out. There's not much on them to ware out. I also have 3 or 4 pieces of original glass that I got with his stuff. He did most of the reloading in our little valley for everyone. He started reloading after he came back from WWII and he told me that's the only one he ever had. But I don't know exactly when he got it.

The original B&M shop in Phillipsburg is still there but abandon. I was in a couple of times before they closed the first time. It was like stepping back in time. They had all kinds of old stuff still in stock. I was too dumb at that time to just buy as much as I could.
