New to the forum, and the Savage!

I recently acquired my first Savage Action. It is the dual port target action registered as a pistol. At this time it is at a local smith who works for Douglass Barrels. He is fitting it with a Douglass 18" x 1.250 S.S. barrel, 12 twist. It will be topped off with eighter a Bushnell 4.5X30 or Burris 8X32 scope. It will be put in a pistol stock on order from Russo Stocks. I can already see where these Savage shooters can get addictive. At the present I have one custom XP100 .223, a couple MOA's, and several Encores and Contenders.

I am really curious about your barrel length. Is it going to finish at 18 inche's or does it finish at 15" 's. I believe that batf state's if it is over 15 inch's that it become's a short barreled rifle regardles of it being in a pistol stock.Short barreled rifle's fall under class 3 weapons. You have to pay a transfer tax and register it as a short barreled rifle. Let me know,I live in new york state and I had a 15" encore barrel with a muzzle brake that made ot about 16.5 inch's long.A local smith told me if I got caught with it I could get in trouble. Can you tell us anything about what the law allows because maybe he was wrong.Sounds like a nice set-up when it is done.

If it's a "undesignated" action and registered as a pistol, the barrel can be any length. It's how the action is "registered" that determines what the minimum length of the barrel needs to be.

I have more than a few registered NYS pistols with really long barrels on them.. IT IS NOT a problem !!!!!!!
NYS has a 16" max for hunting with a pistol though.
The feds could care less how long a pistol barrel is, but they do care how short a rifle barrel is....

Not to highjack your post BUT an inquiring mind wants to know, i purchased a AR lower striped and was paper worked as a pistol here in Pa. have now built the action and have an upper with 24 inch barrel Question is it still a pistol or does it matter at all.

The barrel will finish at 18". The action is registered as a pistol and will be legal.
