New to the 6mmBR world

Just have a couple of questions.

First, what is the parent case to the 6mmBR Norma.

And second,I am going to build a 6mmBR Norma. As I look for parts and pieces I am also looking for dies.I know that there is a 6mmBR Remington that is similar to the Norma but not the same thing. In all the catalogs that I look through, most have the Remington dies and only a few call them out as Norma. Are they actually Norma.Maybe I'll do this the easy way...where can I get good dies for a no turn .272 case?,Lapua of coarse)

Any help would be great,
Thanks, Dean

you can use dies labled 6BR Remington or 6 BR Benchrest.I use a Foster "which is labled as 6 BR Remington" full lenght die with Laupa brass. I had them cut a .259 neck for a .264 chamber but anyones standard BR die will will be fine for a .272 neck.

You may want to get a neck sizer die that takes bushings and then you can switch bushings to your desired neck tension.Redding makes such a die called the type S.

The 6br Norma case is just what it is and nothing else.
All the new dies will work fine but beware of some of the older ones that show up on the auction sites as they can be for the old Reminton br cases, and they tend to be a bit tight for the Lapua cases.
If you have a arbor press the Wilson bushing dies are a major plus in loading very accurate ammo for a 6br, if not then look to Redding bushing dies.

Dean,

Harrell's is also a good option for sizing dies. You send them 3 or 4 fired cases and then they'll pick a die from inventory which closely matches your chamber.

The Harrells dies take Redding or Wilson bushings.

Personally I like a die without bushing. You can buy a Forster FL die and for about $12 they will hone the neck to suit your loaded ammo. For naked bullets, with a .272 chamber, and a .269" loaded round, you'll want a .266 or .267 neck on the die. This is a very simple solution, and, provided forster does a good job), it produces very straight ammo.

Hi Dean,

Welcome to the forum. To answer your question about the differences between the Norma case and Remington case in a little more detail, the folks at Norma had called us, as well as others in the industry, looking for input as to what we might like to see, here at Sinclair, in their upcoming 6BR case. This was several years ago. We told them that we would like to see them try the .060" flash hole since it was proven to work in the 6PPC. They tried it and called us back to let us know that the testing in the ballistic lab proved our hunch as being correct regarding how the smaller flash hole enhanced the accuracy of the BR case. The reason for the "6BR Norma" head stamp is due to the fact that the Norma factory load uses a substantially heavier, longer bullet than the Remington factory load. SAAMI told them that they would have to have some way to differentiate their factory load from the Remington load, and by changing the head stamp slightly, they were able to satisfy SAAMI in regard to the safety concerns. Everyone that carries BR dies have changed to the small dia. decap pins so that all three of the available cases can be loaded by all of the current manufacture die sets available. I hope this will help you, as well as anyone else who has wondered about this bit of history.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine

I have been reloading for about a year and the more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Thanks again,
