New to me AR15 Pictures added

Just received my AR15. It is built around a Stiller Predator XL lower, Giesselle trigger, and Shilen 20" ratchet 8 twist barrel. John Holliger, White Oak Armament, gets credit with most of the work. It is very clean and I really like the fit of the Stiller lower. It is completely stock looking. No Kick Ass Rambo look for me. I just want it to shoot. I will need a good scope base and rings. I do have 20 new military 30 round magazines. I will be looking for load info.

My 24" 8-twist WOA likes 80gr JLK VLDs at the lands over 24.5gr of Varget for the longer lines, 77gr SMKs mag length over 24gr of Varget for the short.

6-groove std, not a ratchet. Wylde chamber.

Re: New to me AR15

I second the "no Rambo", just the basics please. If you've not already done so, Glen D. Zedikers' book "The Competitve AR-15, the mouse that roared" is an excellent publication, as are many others out there. It's just the one I'm most familiar with. My barrel life has been between 4500 & 5000(max), so that's another big plus. Lake City brass has always served me well.

2 poor pictures.

Very nice rifle Butch. I like trigger guards that are part of the receiver and plenty of space for the trigger finger even if you have a glove on and are shooting in the winter. What type of shooting are you going to be doing with it?

Sounds like a plan, also what upper receiver are you using. I have had several different ARs in the past from various makers and had a lot of fun with them. In the last several years i have had 4 Rock River ARs and really liked them better than the others i have had. For a out of the box rifle they are hard to beat for the money. I had the 2 stage match triggers in mine and they where excellent. I thought about getting a aftermarket trigger but i could not justify it because they are that good. As far as accurracy they all shot very well with hand loads and functioned like they were supposed to. I have no AR now but as soon as i get my builds taken care of i think i am going to build 1 also to shoot at the club and use to hunt coyote, fox and groundhogs with here. Their are so many fine uppers and lowers on the market to choose from it is a little overwellming. It will either be a Rock River again or i have been thinking of going with a matched set from Mega Machine to build off from. Good luck with your new rifle and have loads of fun.

I've heard a lot of good from Rock River. Mine is a White Oak upper. I have some buddies that like their Larues.

To load 75 to 77gr plinkers @ mag length, prime up some commercial brass & throw 24.5gr of AA 2460 or AA 2520.
23.5-25gr of the same powders behind the 80's works well also.

Butch, you've gone over to the DARK SIDE :o ;D. Does this mean no more BEAUTIFULLY sculpted bolts (I sure hope not)

Nice looking gun! I'm not sure if that rig has a free floated hand guard but that usually helps with the group sizes.

CJ6,
I have 5 customs in various stages of completion, Enfield 416 Rigby, Peruvian mauser in 250-3000, Hyper Single falling block in 257 Roberts, and a ground up 40X rimfire custom.
DANO6'
You are probably right, but I hope it shoots minute of tincan as is.

Butch,
Whats your thoughts on the stiller? Ive been talking to Russ about them and have yet to make a decision. Looks like a great rig for winter slough busting of some coyotes.

Thank you,

Kyle

White Oak likes the fit and finish. The magwell is wire EDM machined. I wasn't looking for a T shirt, but would like black to match the rifle.

Butch, I think you picked a darned good AR 'smith. John's uppers have taken me from NRA XC HP Expert to High Master - legging out along the way - and through two consecutive state SR championships. He's also been a source for good parts since I've been putting my own uppers together.

The Wilson bbls. he uses on his std. grade uppers are pretty darned good, but a black rifle with a top quality custom bbl. & good chambering work should be accurate enough to impress even hard-core bolt rifle accuracy fanatics.

Dennis,
My friendship and respect for John started years ago. Our first visit was quite testy as we had some disagreements. He was patient enough to kindly show me that he knew a little more about AR triggers than me. This is my second build with John. The first was for Michael Kavanaugh[World's best stock painter]. Michael is an officer in the Navy now. Kavanaugh can shoot MOA with it and iron sights.
John is quite a craftsman and a hell of a marksman.
