New to me 40X 22LR on the way

XTR

F-TR obssessed shooting junkie
I have an old, but new to me 40X action (0XXX ser number) on the way. (not a US marked gun)

My plan is to mount it up with a Jewel in a twin stock to my F-TR rifle and use it for practice. This one already has an Lilja barrel on it. Looking forward to this.

One of the great things about a 40X is you certainly have a nice selection of stocks to choose from.....

I really like the whole same stock, same Jewel trigger setup. This is a complete barreled action, bolt and boltstop.

just recently shot a 22lr 40x for the first time and fell in love nothing is like it we were shooting empty 22 brass at 25 yrds so easily it got boring it is without a doubt the finest rifle i have shot i hope to own one in the very near future

By the serial number it would be a first year gun based on the 722/40-X receivers. The tang is thicker top to bottom and no cutout for a side safety lever like on the 700 that extends up above the tang. You will have to have either one with no safety lever or order one with a bottom safety.

Had Ray Bowman of Precision Rifle and Tool put one together for me. He used one of his FTR Low Boy stocks with a Jewell trigger. Man that thing is nice. They are a great training tool.

Jim, The story I'm told is that this one was a backup gun for a small bore BR shooter. It should be a shooter. My plan is to drop it into a PR&T stock with my backup scope. Same feel as my F-TR rifle.

The rifle Danny fired belongs to me, and she is a CMP ROTC turn-in, 239XX serial range.
It was fouled to the point of near inoperable bolt manipulation, and the stock was sent out for refinishing. My local gunsmith cleaned/tuned the trigger to approximately 2 lbs. She is still at about 85% metal finish-wise, but decided I liked the wear/patina so left that as-is.
Danny is correct, after a judicious cleaning, the bore is nearly pristine although I am thinking about having the crown professionally touched up.

Congrats on getting a 40X.

Did the same thing with my 40x, set it up exactly like my comp rifle. They make great trainers for sure and no reloading!

Worth the time to try a handful of different ammo.

I did the ammo test thing a couple of yrs ago with a CZ453 that was my first pillar bedding experiment. (I bedded it into a Boyds Tacticool) I've still got several partial boxes here from that testing but I found that it was happy with SKJagd Standard Plus or Wolf Match Target (as I understand it same ammo in different boxes) at a little over $5/box. I'm not going to spend more than that for practice ammo. I'll never threaten the supply of that $15/box Eley stuff.

In any case, I know that different rimfires like different ammo, but I've got about 1000 rounds of the Wolf/SK stuff here so that's what I'll shoot for the foreseeable future.
