New to High Power..help

Been doing some tactical prone matches and long distance shooting for a while, but im new to NRA high power, never done it before) and want to set up an AR15 platform correctly,I do believe in the "buy once cry once" mentality. I want to set up a "match rifle". I was considering going 6mmAR, but Im skittish about buying a round that HAS to be reloaded. Also, how well does plain ol .223 do in matches? it seems I can go this route and save a substantial amount on the completed upper. Any good threads I should look at for sights?

I say keep the .223 Rem and spend your money on practice ammo. You can absolutely do it with a .223. I would encourage you also to shoot Service Rifle and High Power both. It will give you more trigger time at matches, unless they shoot at the same time at your range).

We all know that .223 is not the best 600 yd round, but in High Power the shooter is usually the week link.

If you were new to rifle competition, I would tell you to buy an off-the-shelf AR and put a trigger and some match sights on it. Then shoot it until it is worn out. Only after that would it make sense to buy a match upper.

Since you have match experience, you may be frustrated by that approach. Perhaps you can borrow a rifle to see what will work best for you.

You may also try going to an Appleseed. They will help your sling positions as well as your rapids. Their standing position won't help you, but they will let you shoot the standing any way you want.

What caliber are you shooting in your Tactical/prone matches-
308/7.62NATO??

If so restock it,remove the scope, add open sights, stripper clip slot rear action bridge/detachable mag bottom metal w/ 5rd mag capacity.

Building/shooting a circus, service) or match rifle AR-15 to compete in NRA OTC/CMP EIC matches will require you to reload ammo unless you want to spend a buck a round for FGMM or BH ammo.

Build a bolt/match rifle in any mutitude of calibers & your X count will be higher than with a gas gun.

With Bolts Remaining Open-LOAD-Shooters Watch your targets!!!!
