New to 6mmBR

I am looking at buying the Savage Model 12 Long Range Precision Varminter,Repeater) I notice it has a 1/12 twist barrel.I am wanting to use this rifle for coyote, hogs and deer. What nosler ballistic tip or vmax weight bullet should I use?I was wanting to use a 75 grain but will that work in the 12 twist?I want the most accurate round.I live in open country and it seems most shots will be around 500-600 yards.Or would I be better of to just buy the F class in 6mmbr with the 8 twist or maybe the 6.5 x 284 since I am looking at deer and hogs as well?

Thank You
Jason

First of all, I would encourage you to re-think the hogs-to-deer mentality. It is rather like buying an economical commuter car that can also haul a pallet of concrete.

1-12' twists are meant for the small, short and fast varmint bullets like the 55 grain or less variety.

75 grains will NOT work in a 12' twist. They require a 1:8, but may work in some 1:9' twists.

If you want accurate 5-600 yard shots, get a 6BR in a 1:8 twist. I would not suggest you hunt deer at those distances.

There may be some confusion with 1 in 12' twist and 1 in 14' twist not shooting 75 grain bullets. I have more 1 in 8' twist barrels barrels then slower twist, but much,!) prefer the 1-12' for 75 grain and down bullets. Most 12' twist barrels will shoot a 87 grain V-Max but not all. A 1 in 10' twist shoots 90 and 95 grain bullets just fine. The 8' twist is preferred for 105-107 grain bullets which work great at measured distance competitions but do not work as well in the field/hunting situations. The 1 in 14' twist 6mmBR barrels shoot bullets up to 65-68 grains into tiny groups out to 250-300 yards but lack range.

I think the Savage 1-12' twist will make a great varmint and informal target shooter but another deer rifles can be had cheap and there are much better deer cartridges/calibers then the 6mmBR.

Firstly dont use Vmax or ballistic tips on deer. I have used them on pigs and they work but need good shot placement. You would still be better off with a hunting bullet for them too.

Try the 70gr Sierra Blitzking, you will surprised just how well i have seen them shoot at 300yd comps and they will blow varmints away easily.

Jason,
I hunt Groundhog with a 12tw 6BR, shoot a 70 Blitzking at 3500 f/s. With many kills past the 500yds mark. The 12 tw will shoot 80gr bullet and down See 'Egg Shoot and 80gr bullets' on this site. Some say the 14tw will not shoot a 80gr, but I have had 2 6BR the would shoot them super.

The 6BR will work on deer at close ranges, but is a little light for me, living in the east. thick woods. If you don't put them down close, you may have trouble finding them. But in open country, you may be fine.

I think Obtuned may be confusing the 22 and 6mm BR twist rates. Because he is spot on for a .224 diameter. I have 2 6mm BR's, a 14t and a 12t. The 14t is a 40x with a Shilen barrel and it's favorite bullet is a 75gr Sierra Varminter. These bullets are very short for their weight, and bullet length is a much bigger factor in bullet stability than actual bullet weight. My 12t is a Lilja barreled VSSF, it will easily 85 gr Sierra Gamekings under 1' at 200 yds. But with the longer polymer tipped bullets in the 80gr+ range accuracy drops off a little. It's favorite is the 65gr V-Max, it will do about 5/8' at 200yds.
