New to 6br. Advice appreciated

Hey everyone, I finally decided to get into 6br. I picked up a savage 12br 1/8 twist. Along with it cam a Redding neck die and micrometer seating die. I was advised to get 266 and 267 bushings. The die I received did not included any. My question is what other dies will I need.

Also it came with lapua brass 30 fired 70 new. Will someone please give me a run down on their steps on getting new and fired brass ready to load. Also where is the cheapest place to get 6br brass I saw some for $80 on sale at bullets.com

I have been loading for roughly 2 years. But I have never done anything besides Fl size, trim and load. So all of this is somewhat new to me and I feel this is the best place to gain knowledge on 6br. I plan to try and load 105 amax, 105 Barnes match burner and 95g vlds to see what the rifle likes. I am mainly focused on the sizing help. I've never used bushing dies or neck dies. A break down a step by step from beginning to end would be fantastic.

I am 100% open to advice and or suggestion from anyone.

Establish length to lands, neck size only the portion that makes contact with the bearing surface of the bullet. Bump shoulders back .002" when FL sizing, anneal around the 5th firing. Buy a ton of varget, cci 450s, and shoot 105s into small groups. Also your bushing is determined by subtracting .001" from a loaded round. This will give roughly .002" tension on your necks.

If you didn't get a full length die, get one. A Redding Type S.

Great choice of gun and caliber. I use Redding FL Type S with .268 and .269 TN bushings. The TN coating is .0005 thick, so these are ACTUALLY .267 and .268. I do not clean the inside of cases (no machines that work harden brass), just a good, stiff nylon neck brushing inside and Flitz LIQUID (not paste) on the outside. The remaining residue stabilizes at about .0002", so loaded rounds end up about .2695" (your Savage chamber neck is .271-.272").
Bump shoulder .002-.003" short of chamber.

Don't waste your money in Amax or Barnes for targets (great for hunting though). The "gold standard" in this caliber is 105gr -108gr VLD's and 107gr SMK's.

Try RL 17 over CCI 450's, jump your VLD's .010-.015" and enjoy.

I've got a couple hundred 95g vld's what do you think about them

95gr VLD's are very high quality, like all Berger products. I've tried them in 8 twist and found them not quite as accurate as 105's, I suspect because they have a VERY short bearing surface. They would be an excellent choice for long range pest control up to coyote or hunting game such as fox.

"My question is what other dies will I need."

You need a body die to go with your bushing neck die. I use the competition shell holders to control shoulder bump. You also need some way to open up the necks on new brass. A FL die will do that. I use a K&M 0.243" expander.

"Also where is the cheapest place to get 6br brass I saw some for $80 on sale at bullets.com"

With 30 fired and 70 new you don't need any more brass. That's plenty to burn out that barrel.

"Will someone please give me a run down on their steps on getting new and fired brass ready to load."

Expand the necks. Either an expander or a FL die.
Trim to a uniform length. Might try for 1.550" and if they don't all clean up make it a little shorter.
Chamfer the inside of the neck slightly. Outside optional.
Check the flash holes for burrs.
Load 'em up.

What I do:

1 - Polish outside of necks with 0000 steel wool
2 - Deprime - I use a Lee "Universal" deprimer - had to turn the pin down for the small flash hole.
3 - Primer pocket uniformer - Sinclair PPC model - I do it to get the crud out of the corners of the primer pockets. Makes it easier to feel the primer hit bottom.
4 - Nylon brush to the inside of the neck on RCBS case prep gizmo. Same brush for 15 years.
5 - Shoulder bump with body die and Comp Shell holders. I have two sets. One set has been polished a thousandth so I can do it one thousandth increments. I use RCBS Case Lube II.
6 - Neck size - I use a Harrell's but your Redding will do the same thing.
7 - Wipe lube off with a damp rag and dry with hair dryer.
8 - Primers
9 - Powder
10 - Bullets

I would suggest trying some Berger 105 BT's. They used to be known as "Length Tolerant". They may not shoot the best vs the Hybrid and VLD but they're the easiest to get to shoot well in my experience.
