New to 35 Remington

Hey all. Picking up a Marlin 336 35 remington in the next few weeks. I plan to cast and use lower priced jacketed bullets. Its coming with a few boxes of factory ammo for brass. So far, I'll be using some hard cast hollow points sized to 358 approx 165gr when PC'd. I also picked up some 250gr subx bullets for the 350 Legend that I plan on moving along at 16-1800 fps.

Purchased just a simple Lee die set with FC. I'm not looking for sub moa, just minute of deer from the muzzle out to 125-150. Just looking for any advice or pet loads for this new to me caliber. Pretty good selection of powders and primers available to me. Plan on starting with 335, but thinking of some SR4759 for the heavies to keep velocity down and casefil up.

Any help and advice is appreciated. Thanks!
SHM

I shoot lots of pistol bullets out of my xp100. A couple favorites are 22 sr4759 158 jsp (1850 fps) and 5.2 titegroup 140 hc (1020 fps) Both will shoot sub inch at 50 yd.

Big fan of Hornady Custom Grade Die for 35 Rem.
The dropping sleeve on the seating die is a winner.
Also the Lee Universal Expander for prep.
Don't forget the Lee Factory Crimp Die.
2400 and IMR4227 for cast lead bullets.
Beyond the Speers and Hornadys I have shot, Berry's 158's, 180g MBC Pug Nose (seated deeper) and A couple 205 grain cast lead and every day 158g cast lead semi-wadcutters.

Great, thanks for the pistol bullet suggestions, I carry quite a few for the 357.

I'll keep an eye out for some hornady die for sure. The die set was only 35 and I prefer a Lee FCD anyway for tube mags, so that gives me a direction after I do a few run out tests. I'll look at 4227 as well. Thank you.

Mine is in a Remington Model 8.
I use the Lee and prefer the mandrel.
I use .359 / 207gr RN Hard Cast, flat base with no GC, over H335, and think I'm going to powder coat them in the future. My load is from Lyman Cast Bullet manual. (to lazy to find the charge / OAL info card).
[Edit to add] I just picked up a SAECO #352 mold, casting 245gr / .358 GC bullets. I'm looking forward to casting and trying those. [/edit]
If you use cast bullets, you'll either need to flare the case mouth or chamfer the base of the bullet to help it get started. Because it's an autoloader, I use the Lee FC die. That worked well when I flared the mouth, but now I just chamfer -- easier and faster.
I never bothered chrono'ing them. Using the buckhorns on the rifle, I get 2.5 MOA at 100, which is good enough for deer. Considering my rifle is 117 years old, I'm not sure I'll take it hunting.

Here's what I use to chamfer, do it by hand :

I’ve been deep into the 35 Rem for the past year or so. I’m of no help with the cast bullets, but the “one book/one caliber” booklet seems like a good resource for that.

I haven’t tried H335 yet, but that seems like a good powder for the lighter bullets. I’ve been using IMR3031 for 180 grain copper bullets and Leverevolution for 200 grain. From a 20” barrel, I’m getting about 2250 fps with the 180s and 2050 with the 200s.

My advice is to stock up on brass any way you can. There seems to be some factory ammo available right now, but no telling how long that will last. Brass and factory ammo was completely unavailable for at least the last 2 years, and gunbroker scalpers were asking ridiculous prices.

LeverEvolution is a *great* powder for this.
If you cannot find brass, you can make it from 7.62x51 with some effort.

We shoot a Remington Model 8 in .35 Remington sometimes but not so much lately.
My load is settled on a 200 grain spire point bullet I bought from Midway in bulk. I believe they are a Remington bullet.

Bought a 35 Rem in March, a black walnut Bishop stocked 336A mfr'd in 1959. One family rifle, seller's dad bought it new in '59 then gave to his son some years later, who kept it until I purchased from him.

His data for that rifle with the RCBS 35-200-FN (use at your discretion) 38gr H335, COAL 2.410", CCI 200. Chrono data - 2081fps avg , 5-shots, with a 16.9 SD.

Seller supplied some boolits with the rifle which I loaded to his data and it shot just over an inch @ 100yd. ;)

I advise slugging the throat and chamber to see what optimal size is for a cast bullet.
Hard cast can work and have there place. However, don’t believe a lot of what is spoken of hard cast, it can’t and won’t replace proper size and design.
Micro groove can shoot cast very well with some work.
Do some searches there is good info on the subject.
I have used heavy jacketed pistol bullets at some what reduced rifle velocities with good results.

That would be quite the effort.
7.62 case base diameter 0.471 vs 35 REM 0.458
Yes. The .35 Rem case has a unique base dimension. It is even different than it's cousins -the .25 Rem, 30 Rem, and .32 Rem. which all were 0.418." The .35 is the only one to survive obsolescence because it is a fantastic short range big game cartridge.

That guy -

Howdy!

Lyman's .35 Remington reloading data has been pretty good, in my experience.

Be advised....SR4759 has been discontinued.

I have a CT-made M-336XLR .35Remington. In my rifle ( 12 groove Ballard rifling ),
" reduced loads " of H4198 out-shot those assembled using reduced amounts of H4895.

For full power loads, I found great accuracy shooting IMR3031; but more recently
the newer IMR4166 looked promising.

With regards,
357Mag

I have no cast experience, but in my 336 with Ballard style, Winchester RN group much better than the LEVERevolution does. Both factory loads, not handloads. Haven’t gotten that far yet.
