You can not beat the Lapua "Palma" brass for sheer strength and stability..

+1 on that.

I've been shooting it since the first year it was introduced. Cases from that first batch bear the same lot # as cases I bought last month, and still shoot the same as they did when new. I even made up 98 as 6XC cases (since the Norma factory brass is so rare now) after some considerable effort & they're just as accurate AND more long-lived - primer pocket-wise - as Norma's large rifle cases.

Only caveat: if you shoot large-grained propellant (unusual but not unheard-of in 308) you may want to use magnum SR primers or their regular 308WIN, LR primered brass to ensure reliable ignition.

thank you S P what powder and grain bullets are you using im shooting 600 yds thanks bill

Re: new to 308 reloading

8208XBR for four seasons now with pretty much anything under 156 grains.

I find Berger's 155.5 shoots equally well out to 1,000 yards in three different barrels with the same load.

I prefer to shoot the light-weights as much because the rules for Fullbore limit us to them as because I get better feedback from my attempts at correcting for what I perceive the wind to be doing when I elect to touch off the next round....

I'm no expert but do spend a fair amount of time loading .308 for 600 yards and thus far here's my top trusted consistent load uses LC NATO brass. The stuff is a PIA to size the first time but dam is it TOUGH stuff ! i'm on my 7th reload and primer pockets are still nice and snug ! The big bonus is you can pick up once fired NATO brass easily on forums for cheap money.

168 smk with 41.9 gr. of Win 748 . avg FPS is 2560 will consistently shoot .5 moa or better.

Just keep in mind as always, my rifle will shoot differently than yours so start with lower charges and work up. I rarely have found any load that shoots well in my rifle near max suggested loads.

I don't know about Lapua in 308. Never used it. I do have about 400 Winchester cases that have been severely abused. The primer pockets are still tight, they only seem to die from stretching because I oversized them several times early in their lives.

Most of them are or their 10th firing with some beyond 15. They've been through 2 different barrels.

If I had to do it again, I'd buy Winchester.

Just my two cents...

I started with WIN brass years ago. The old stuff is vastly better than what's come out since they left Illinois behind them a few years ago. Off-center flash holes, wrinkled shoulders, inconsistent neck wall thickness... you name it.

It was hard to find for awhile which caused me to look to Lapua before their Palma brass was introduced. I was having primer pocket / head expansion issues that motivated me to try the Palma stuff & I've never looked back.

Winbrass is good, real good, Lapua slightly better, cant find winbrass, Lapua available almost all through this latest crazieness. I use winbrass for my o6 long rang loads exclusively, I would use it for my 300 WM too but cant find it available, so I use FGMM brass. I also like LC brass once I do full prep, its as good in 308 as you would need for under 800 if you prep properly. I use lapua, Winbrass on my bolt guns and LC on my LR AR as well as my other AR's, it does very well in the bolts though. Its all in the prep and load development between these 3brands, sorting helps too.

im on my 24th reload using lapua palma brass to push 185 juggs at 2810.....large primer brass cant come anywhere close to this durability

thanks to all i think i know where im starting with brass and bullets (lapua palma brass 155 scenar and 175 SMK bullet could i get some ideas on powder thanks again bill

You might try IMR 8208XBR but I know it's too fast for 185's.

N150, H4895, maybe RL19, Norma 204 if you can find some.

Would be interested in seeing some 5 shot groups at 100 yards with all the differnt bullets, and how those same loads perform at longer distances. If anyone has any pictures of targets as I'm am getting ready to start loading for a 308 w the goal of the tightest groups possible at 100.
